Getting a Job After Graduation

Success in finding good employment after college begins with activities and actions during college. While you spend two, four or more years in a higher-education setting, one major key to successfully earning a job after graduation is to keep active during your time in school.

Take on some responsibility after you settle into your academics. You already attend classes, have a job and try to get good grades. Stand out from the crowd and join a professional society, organization or a student's union. Take this organization one step further for your job after graduation, and get a leadership role in your organization of choice. This adds a great line to your resume for later consideration.

Work during your college years, either on campus or off campus, at a part-time job. If you can keep the same job for every year you attend classes, you may earn the respect of a supervisor or manager. This leads to a great reference for your potential job after graduation. Try to find employment in your chosen field of study to get to know how things work in your profession.

Develop your personality, work ethic and communication skills as a college student. That way, you understand what employers want when you attend a job interview later in life. The more you communicate and receive feedback, the better these experiences prepare you for a real-world job after graduation. Maintain a positive attitude, and carry over that persona into your post-graduate years.

Volunteer some time every once in a while. Even two to four hours per month can make a difference when you graduate. This adds work experience to your resume and gets another good reference for a job after graduation. Check with your university about volunteer opportunities in your area to start developing relationships as soon as possible.

Create an online presence as you document your time in college. Maintain a blog about your thoughts, observations and events in college. Connect with similar minds on LinkedIn, and maintain those relationships as anyone in your network could pay off with a lucrative job offer after you graduate.

Market yourself through whatever outlets you find appealing. Earn a job at a college media department such as a newspaper, television studio, radio station or website. Take a sales job within the university to help bring donations to the school. If you feel so inclined, start your own business, and market your goods or services to the community at large.

Much like your choices for a job after graduation, the opportunities to make connections before commencement abound. The most important aspect of this time is to enjoy yourself, because your passion shows through to your professional life. This passion leads to income, career fulfillment and success.
