Let's face it, if you're over 50, you're a target in this tough new downsized economy. If you've been laid off, you've got to work extra hard to "get back in the game." You'll need a plus-50 job finding strategy.
For starters, focus on a specific industry and position. Don’t waste time searching or applying for jobs you don’t want or qualify for. Zero in on the job and type of company that best fits your background, experience and skills. Target your resume--your skills and accomplishments--to the specific job you're after. Look for “age friendly” employers by visiting the AARP National Employer Team and Retirement Jobs.com Web sites.
Be honest about your skills and what you need to survive. Chances are, you won't get that high paying admin job you once had. Consider all options--full time, temporary, part-time, contract, seasonal, or even a job with less responsibility if you’re changing careers.
Don't just blindly send out a bunch of resumes the day you were laid off. Take a few days to develop an effective job-search strategy. Set aside a block of time to begin and end your daily job-search efforts. And mix it up--do industry research, then research employers, followed by networking.
Don’t stay "ball & chained" to your computer. Get out, participate in networking events, job search seminars and career fairs. Carry your cell phone so you can respond to employers quickly. Add a workout routine to your daily job search activities. Physical exercise will improve your mental attitude--something you'll need to impress interviewers.
Build your support system. If you hit a "brick wall" in your job search, consider a career coach. If you feel an employer is discriminating against you, move on to the next employer. Getting angry only wastes time and energy.
