    Description

    Maritime Operations within Mission Technologies - Nuclear & Environmental Services, is looking for a Welding/Mechanical Engineer 2 to join the team in Newport News, VA.

    Mechanical Engineers in the Maritime Operations group play a crucial role in supporting various functional areas at Newport News Shipyard. This position will involve engineering and technical support related to the construction, testing and operations of propulsion and reactor plant components.

    What You Will Do

    This position will be embedded into a direct support role in the Newport News Shipbuilding Weld Engineering group. This group is responsible for providing technical support for all welding operations, divided into four focused groups. Specific duties may vary, but can include:

    • Field work to investigate, resolve, and improve welding issues.

    • Qualifying and writing welding procedures.

    • Process evaluation.

    • Metallurgical testing.

    • Research and Development.

    • Technical reporting.

    • Audits and surveillance.

    • Reviewing and approving supplier welding procedures.

    • Audit and assessment of suppliers.

    • Act as the welding subject matter expert (SME) for production trades and engineering.

    What You Must Have

    • Candidate is required to have either:

    • Two (2) years at level experience with a Bachelors in Engineering or related field;

    • Or zero (0) years at level experience with a Masters in Engineering.

    • Candidate must have successfully completed an undergraduate Engineering degree or related field from an ABET accredited program.

    • Candidate must have welding/manufacturing experience.

    • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

    • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen.

    Bonus Points For ...

    • Bachelors in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, Materials Joining, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science Engineering. Is preferred.

    • Experience with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods including visual inspection (VT), magnetic particle inspection (MT), dye-penetrant inspections (PT), eddy current inspections (ET), ultrasonic inspections (UT), and/or radiographic inspections is preferred.

    • US Navy nuclear propulsion plant experience is preferred.

    Physical Requirements

    May require working in an office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
