    Job Description

The Electric Vehicles and Grid Integration team within the Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences researchers how the grid can support rapid vehicle electrification with the least impacts, while improving energy resilience. This involves both site specific analysis, and grid level analysis into different charge management controls. The team conducts both simulated control evaluations and lab testing, as well as field demonstrations.

The EV-Cents project is part of the EVs@Scale Consortium and seeks to determine the benefits managed charging can bring to utilities, and especially to the distribution system. The intern hired under this requisition will work with researchers to develop analysis tools to quantify grid impacts and benefits of different charging control paradigms.

The intern will be responsible for:

    • Development of impact metrics to quantify control impacts
    • Statistical analysis of co-simulation results
    • Geospatial analysis of distribution of impacts
    • Writing and presenting a final report on their analysis

This experience will expose the intern to several assets within NREL including the optimization and control lab where control are tested on real equipment, the visualization lab where big data is analyzed more easily and geospatial analysis can be conducted, and the high performance computer for scaled analysis. The intern will also join consortium meetings where results from several national labs and other industry stakeholders are reviewed.
