Job Summary:
The Transfusion Safety Officer works with multidisciplinary groups within the institution to ensure best practices for transfusion safety, including the development or recommendation of appropriate policies and procedures. The Transfusion Safety Officer provides analysis of current practices contributing to transfusion errors and development of proactive steps to prevent errors, facilitation of process and system changes, and staff education that reduce the likelihood of occurrence and recurrence of error. The Transfusion Safety Officer also coordinates event analysis as appropriate with the support of other Quality and Safety staff and data analysis/trend identification that indicates opportunities for process improvement. Two professional backgrounds will be successful in this role - Nursing or Medical Lab Science.

Shift: First Shift (Days)
Key Responsibilities:
Oversees the VUMC Patient Blood Management Program including supporting the development of annual goals for the program to align with the VUMC's overall quality and safety plan.
Collaborates with Blood Bank Medical Director, Blood Bank Operations Leaders, Transfusion Committee, Physician and Nursing Leaders, and Quality and Safety partners to establish, monitor, and maintain safety protocols and procedures to promote safe patient care and in compliance with clinical policies and regulatory requirements.
Participates and facilitates (as applicable) in key committees to support Transfusion Safety including but not limited to the VUMC Transfusion Committee, Quality and Safety committees, and others.
Maintains effective communication and coordination with all disciplines across the continuum of care that interface with blood products, management, and transfusion safety.
Is knowledgeable about and aids organization with compliance with external regulations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), The Joint Commission (TJC), AABB, College of American Pathologists (CAP), and other key organizations/ regulators.
Identifies and manages data resources to continually improve transfusion safety in all steps of the transfusion process as well as blood product waste.
Reviews transfusion error events provided by the Risk Management occurrence reporting system
Utilizes and maintains appropriate databases for analysis of the transfusion process and provides necessary data for organizational benchmarking to departmental and hospital leadership.
Facilitates process and system improvements to reduce the likelihood of occurrence and recurrence of error.
Assists with identification of budgetary issues relating to transfusion safety and ensures appropriate resources are allocated to achieve goals.
Maintains expertise for literature and best practices in various practice areas in all aspects of transfusion safety.
Promotes benchmarking and evidence-based practice in the transfusion of appropriate blood components and their alternatives; comparative financial aspects of alternatives with blood component therapy.
Consistently promotes teamwork and utilizes effective data analysis and communication skills in achieving goals and responsibilities
Attend and represent the organization at relevant external meetings and conferences.
Represent the organization on relevant external committees, task forces, and organizations.
Identify opportunities to highlight the organization's success stories relating to transfusion safety for relevant external audiences.
Demonstrates leadership and facilitative skills along with public speaking competencies.
Participate in the development and delivery of educational programs for clinical team members.

A master's degree is strongly preferred
A Nursing degree is preferred with experience in critical care or ER or a Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Professional ( Licensed Tennessee Medical Lab Act (required) - Licensed Medical Laboratory Technologist (required) - Successful completion of CAHEA or NAACLS accredited Medical Technology program or BS from accredited institution).
Must possess the ability to be self-directed with the ability to identify and resolve problems and move processes forward.
Academic Medical Center experience preferred.
