    GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

    Under limited supervision, transcribes and edits pathology reports. Responsible for coding, billing and maintaining of pathology records and specimens

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    High School Diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a formal medical transcription course (including human biology) or at least six months of acute care transcription experience. Knowledge of medical terminology, transcription guidelines and practices. Certified medical transcriptionist (CMT) preferred but not required.

    Six months of medical transcription editing experience preferred.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organizational Mission, Core Values, and Vision in behaviors, practices, policies and decisions. Transcribes and edits pathology, peripheral smears, and autopsy reports accurately and in a timely manner, according to transcription guidelines, standards of style and formats of practice. Transcribes letters, memos and other reports as dictated by the pathologists.

    Edits documents consistently, according to transcription guidelines, standards of style and formats of practice. Recognizes, interprets and evaluates inconsistencies, discrepancies, and inaccuracies in medical dictation and appropriately clarifies and flags as needed. Follows procedures for dispatching finished reports to designated persons for approval and signature, and for dispatching copies to appropriate individuals, as well as maintaining files pertinent to pathology reports and pathology correspondence.

    Performs ICD coding on all referral specimens and CPT coding for billing purposes on all referral and hospital specimens for billing. Responsible for correct entry of patient information into laboratory computer system and pulling of history files. Responsible for the shipping of slides, blocks, and/or fresh specimens to referral facilities with proper authorization and billing information Works with others on upgrades for Anatomical Pathology computer systems. Assists in setting up for pathology. Utilizes all available reference tools to ensure the accuracy of the transcribed document. Ability to operate transcription equipment.

    Experience with MS Word preferred. Ability to operate fax, copiers and other office machines. Excellent editing skills and attention to detail. Excellent skills in English usage, grammar, punctuation, style and editing. Knowledge of legal concepts relevant to confidentiality standards associated with medical care.
