SMX is actively seeking a Senior Technical Writer for a full-time, on-site position at Ft. Belvoir, focusing solely on cybersecurity deliverables within GISA. As a Senior Technical Writer, you will develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for IT and cybersecurity processes, ensuring clarity and accuracy; collaborate with subject matter experts to translate complex technical information into user-friendly manuals, guides, and training materials; manage documentation libraries, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements; and stay current with emerging IT trends. Your expertise will support effective communication and operational efficiency across the organization.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Develop, write, and maintain comprehensive documentation for IT and cybersecurity processes, procedures, and systems, including policies and enterprise-level plans.
Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather information and understand technical and functional specifications.
Create user manuals, technical guides, system manuals, and training materials for a range of audiences, including end-users, IT professionals, and management.
Ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency in all technical documentation.
Translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and easily understandable language.
Edit, standardize, and revise materials prepared by other writers or technical staff.
Maintain documentation libraries and manage document version control.
Research, write, and edit security policies, standards, and best practices.
Develop and update FAQs, knowledge base articles, and help files.
Ensure documentation complies with regulatory requirements.
Create visual aids such as diagrams, flowcharts, and screenshots to enhance understanding of technical content.
Conduct peer reviews and usability testing on documentation to ensure effectiveness.
Stay current with emerging IT and cybersecurity trends and technologies.
Assist in the development and delivery of training programs related to IT and cybersecurity.
Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to project deadlines.
Liaise with IT and cybersecurity teams to document incident response procedures and post-incident analysis reports.
Review and update documentation to reflect changes in hardware, software, and procedures as technology evolves.
Assist in the creation of compliance reports and audit documentation for regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
Required Skills, Experience & Education
A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, cybersecurity, or a related field.
Active TS security clearance and eligibility for SCI and NATO read-on prior to starting work.
Meet the DoD 8140/8570.01-M requirements at the IAT level III.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in technical writing, specifically within IT or cybersecurity domains.
Strong understanding of IT and cybersecurity concepts, technologies, and best practices.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical information clearly and concisely.
Proficiency in using documentation tools and software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and content management systems (CMS) like Confluence or SharePoint.
Desired Skills, Experience
Experience working in a DoD or similar government environment.
Familiarity with compliance standards such as NIST, FISMA, or ISO 27001.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Excellent time management and the ability to manage multiple priorities
