Job Title: Tax SpecialistJob Description
The Tax Specialist will be responsible for the effective and timely completion and filing of all requisite tax returns for complex Estate and Trust accounts. The Tax Specialist fulfills a variety of income tax compliance, planning, and administrative functions.
Responsibilities
Obtain information from clients, and internal and external sources required to prepare and file income tax returns. Perform calculations, complete required schedules, and organize the information for complex returns.
Accurately prepare personal, Estate, and trust income tax returns and schedules. Identify post-mortem and other tax planning opportunities. Act as a technical tax resource to the ETA Team.
Review assessment notices and prepare adjustment requests, objection notices, and Clearance Certificate requests for filing. Correspond with the CRA to ensure any requests for information are provided.
Maintain service standards for quality, responsiveness, and timeliness.
Liaise with trust staff, outside tax professionals, and clients to ensure that income tax filing requirements for more complex returns are met on a timely basis, taxation issues are explained and resolved, and tax strategies are implemented effectively.
Participate in special projects as assigned.
Manage and train junior staff.
Review complex tax returns such as GRE's and terminal returns, rights, or things.
Take ownership of assigned projects with limited supervision.
Essential Skills
3-5+ years of experience as a Tax Specialist/Analyst.
Familiarity with graduated rate estates (GRE), terminal returns, T3 trust, and estate returns.
Post-secondary degree in accounting or equivalent (Accounting Degree, Diploma, or related field such as Business/Finance).
Experience with tax preparation software.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
CPA preferred or working towards.
Strong initiative and preparation for interviews.
Excellent attention to detail.
Proficient computer skills and ability to work paperless.
Strong tax research and analytical skills.
Ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously with effective time management.
Well-developed communication skills to interact effectively with clients, professionals, and small groups.
Exceptional writing skills to prepare detailed communications with specialized Estates & Trusts terminology.
Ability to make decisions and a collaborative mindset.
Work Environment
The team is responsible for the compliance for trust clients, which include individuals that are deceased and their trusts as well as estates. The individual will report directly to the Director. The position requires 37.5 hours per week, typically from 9-5 Monday to Friday, with flexible working hours as long as they are within core hours. Overtime is expected in March and April (approximately 10 hours of OT per week).
