    The role you'll contribute:

    Directs the daily task assignment for completion of work each day. Responsible for assigning, instructing and checking the work of others. Prioritizes and reassigns staff and work making adjustments to meet unusual production needs. Provides input on staffing levels to provide support services required by the hospital.

    Assists, instructs, and may oversee the specialized, technical skills requirements and work performance in the department. Provides education to the procedural departments and sterile processing staff as requested.

    Assists in investigation of problem areas or complaints concerning intra- and interdepartmental operation.

    Assists in the implementation of policy and procedure.

    Work with the Supervisor and/or Manager in developing in-service programs and orientation programs. Assists the Supervisor/Manager in training and education of staff and new hires to assure that all staff has completed necessary requirements for assigned facility, AdventHealth and other regulatory agencies.

    Collaborates with Supervisor and/or Manager and staff to ensure instruments are available for cases including add-ons and emergencies.

    Effectively uses time, personnel, equipment and supplies to provide high quality, cost effective delivery of patient care on a daily basis.

    May assist in emergency cart checks as needed and records expiration dates.

    Follows mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that could have affected the clinical care of any patient.

    Cleans, decontaminates, inspects, assembles, and wraps or packages supplies and instruments using proper techniques and procedures and sterilizes supplies and instruments using the prescribed method (e.g. steam, immediate use sterilization). Understands the basic principles of all sterilization equipment used in the department including the automatic endoscope reprocessing system. Demonstrates knowledge of how items to be sterilized should be packaged in a manner that promotes successful sterilization.

    Operates various sterilizers including both steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers and is proficient in high level disinfection and validates the proper functioning of all equipment using established mechanical and biological monitors.

    Tests and monitor sterilizing equipment through the use of mechanical, chemical and biological indicators by performing daily BIs and Bowie Dick tests; including running, incubating and documenting the results.

    Understands the recommended practices for cleaning and care of surgical instruments and powered equipment and the device manufacturer's validated and written instructions for use.

    Keeps up to date and maintains competency in the use of any high level disinfection solution and follows hospital policies and understands the recommended practices for using detergents, enzymatic solutions and follows the scope, and instrument reprocessing methods step-by-step to meet manufacturer recommendations including Instruction for Use (IFU) and can instruct others and be a hospital resource.

    Operates washer/decontaminator per department policy and procedure.

    Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, including high level disinfection, and sterilization of soiled scopes and sterilization of items from procedural areas following infection control policies and procedures. Facilitates the cleaning and processing of laryngoscope blades.

    Understands that devices labeled as single-use should not be reprocessed unless the FDA guideline for reprocessing of single use devices can be met.

    Ensures that sterilized supplies and instruments are correctly labeled and stored in a manner to ensure sterility and understands that all storage areas are to be in compliance with any applicable regulatory guidelines. Assists with storing sterilized items and equipment in a specified location. Understands all storage areas are to be in compliance with all applicable regulatory guidelines.

    Maintains sterilization, scope cleaning, high level disinfection, and eye wash records according to all standards.

    Works closely with Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Manager, Supervisor and OR Coordinators to assist in instrument repairs, quick turnovers, immediate use sterilization and any other staffing needs deemed necessary.

    Maintains CRCST, CIS or CBSPD certification.

    Adheres to department procedures and acceptable protocols.

    Utilizes features of computerized tray/instrument tracking system, if applicable.

    Applies knowledge of the dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

    Reports any life safety issues, environmental concerns or process deviation to immediate supervisor.

    Monitor function of processing equipment; troubleshoot and correct minor equipment failures such as sterilizer sequencing; initiate requests to vendors for service as needed and reports equipment malfunctions and repair needs to Supervisor and/or Manager.

    Participates in developing a Quality Improvement plan.

    Orders new or replacement instruments as requested by leadership and surgeons.

    Reports monthly sterilization data

    Maintains a customer friendly rapport with peers and internal/external customers.

    Works with vendors for set completeness, on time delivery of consignment sets, instrument sharpening and repair, and implant re-stock to ensure set completeness and excellent instrument working conditions.

    Maintains cooperative working relationships with others.

    Communicates appropriately and professionally with peers.

    Solves routine customer service problems, ensure quality services and customer support, and provide technical advice.

    Assists in the investigation and routine problem or complaints concerning intra and interdepartmental operation.

    Records reflect work activity as prescribed by department policy.

    Utilizes hospital computer based programs, such as OneSource, and Instructions for Use (IFU) resources for tracking all equipment and instruments.

    Maintains all sterilization logs and records for quality control and recall purposes.

    • Performs routine tasks relating to the decontamination, processing, sterilization and distribution of instruments, equipment and sterile supplies.

    • Responsible for general operating and monitoring of sterilization, maintaining records in compliance with AAMI, AORN, Joint Commission, and OSHA standards.

    • Maintains certification, monitors and instructs certified and non-certified personnel.

    • Communicates with departments and staff throughout the day to maintain a smooth workflow.

    Qualifications

    The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:

    • High School Diploma or GED

    • 2 years of sterile equipment processing

    • One of the following primary Central Services certifications is required upon hire or transfer: CRCST, CBSPDT

    • One of the following post-primary certifications is required within one year of hire or transfer: CIS, CSIS, CER, CFER, CHL, CSPM, CASSPT
