Reporting to the Director, Clinical Finance and Operations, the Senior Manager, Clinical Improvement and Performance Excellence will provide strategic and collaborative leadership for the development, deployment, and optimization of data-driven population health and clinical operations initiatives in pursuit of excellence in primary care and subspecialty within the Clinical Practice Group (CPG). The Senior Manager's portfolio will include leading CPG efforts to improve patient outcomes and ensure effective, equitable, and timely care while supporting and empowering team members and supporting growth of operational efforts.
This role is responsible for the integration of transformative primary care delivery with a focus on continuous quality improvement, change management, analytics, and measurable impact. The Senior Manager will partner with executive leadership to set measurable organizational goals and use improvement science to lead interdisciplinary care teams through the process of defining best practices, creating standard workflows, and tracking progress towards meeting objectives. This role will have direct oversight of quality improvement initiatives and clinical operational efforts and may supervise a team dedicated to performance excellence.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Essential Functions of the Job:
Support the Chief of Clinical Operations by collaboratively setting the vision, strategy, and culture for engagement in continuous quality improvement activities and clinical operations growth strategies with clinic leadership and team members.
Maintain knowledge of industry best practices in primary care excellence.
Contribute to and support operational and strategic planning for CPG, ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals such as value-based care and population health management.
Provide counsel to the Chief on current and alternate strategies to meet goals.
Translate strategies and priorities into concrete plans for improvement. Monitor progress using key performance indicators (KPIs). Ensure priorities are clear and well-communicated.
Lead root cause analysis and performance improvement initiatives with care teams using standard improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, and PDSA cycles.
Promote implementation, dissemination, and system-wide learning.
Oversee performance evaluation through quality reporting and analytics. Ensure data integrity and consistency in all evaluations.
Define key performance indicators and create data visualizations to meet the needs of stakeholders.
Conduct in-depth data analysis to support decision-making, identify trends, and develop actionable insights for improvement.
Increase data transparency by developing infrastructure to promote real-time availability of quality data for leadership and care team members.
Monitor the impact of initiatives on revenue where appropriate and use financial metrics to align clinical improvements with sustainability.
Advance performance improvement capacity through the development of workforce toolkits or curriculum on improvement science. Provide coaching and mentorship to staff to build capacity in quality improvement methodologies.
Align with UVA Health's commitment to being a learning organization by participating in collaborative opportunities with other primary care divisions to discuss barriers and share best practices.
Serve as a representative for UVA Physicians Group in enterprise-wide ambulatory quality discussions with other division leadership and external stakeholders, including payers and community organizations, to enhance population health initiatives.
Lead efforts to identify disparities in care and develop strategies to promote equitable care for diverse and underserved populations.
Required Skills:
Strong leadership and change management skills. Superior organizational, planning, and project management skills.
Experience or knowledge of health system informatics, technology, and reporting.
Advanced understanding of the relationship between hospital and clinic workflows, clinical documentation, and data, particularly with Epic Systems.
Ability to create strong working relationships and collaborate across multiple internal and external stakeholders, including community organizations and payers.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including comfort with complex analyses to support data-driven recommendations.
Experience in creating data visualizations and presenting data insights to inform leadership decisions
Excellent written and oral communication skills to ensure mutual understanding with diverse stakeholders and experience giving presentations.
Expertise in improvement science frameworks, tools, and methodologies, including Lean, Six Sigma, and PDSA cycles.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities) :
Substantial experience in public health (10-12 years) with demonstrated success preferred.
Experience leading or supervising a team in quality improvement initiatives.
Proven experience in promoting equitable care and addressing health disparities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :
Direct oversight of quality improvement initiatives and clinical operational efforts.
Supervise a team dedicated to performance excellence.
Provide coaching, mentorship, and guidance to team members to build capacity in quality improvement methodologies.
Lead interdisciplinary care teams through processes to define best practices, create standard workflows, and track progress towards objectives.
Advance performance improvement capacity by developing workforce toolkits or curriculum on improvement science.
Support the development, engagement, and empowerment of team members in continuous quality improvement and clinical operations growth strategies.
WORKING CONDITIONS : Primarily a sedentary position within a standard office setting within a healthcare organization, with typical office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. The role may require working on-site at clinical locations for meetings or initiatives. Occasional travel may be needed between clinical sites, for meetings, or to engage in collaborative efforts with community organizations and stakeholders.
