Immediate opening for a full-time attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at Stanford University, supporting SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The attorney would report directly to the General Counsel of Stanford University, with day-to-day supervision provided by the Chief Laboratory Counsel. SLAC is a vibrant multi-program laboratory whose mission is to explore how the universe works at the biggest, smallest, and fastest scales and invent powerful tools used by scientists around the globe. As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory managed and operated by Stanford, SLAC research helps solve real-world problems and advances the interests of the nation. SLAC and Stanford faculty, scientists, and engineers regularly collaborate with world-leading universities, institutes, and companies to perform cutting edge research to further scientific knowledge. Several Nobel Prizes have been awarded for research done at SLAC.
In support of SLAC and Stanford's exciting mission and in working closely with the SLAC legal team, the Senior Laboratory Counsel is primarily responsible for providing legal counsel to SLAC leadership, management, and staff. The attorney may also provide advice across the University. The attorney is expected to work collaboratively with stakeholders in the Department of Energy, peers at other national laboratories, and other attorneys in the Office of General Counsel. The position requires discretion, flexibility, and the ability to understand and manage projects with competing interests.
Experience in California employment law is preferred. The attorney can expect to build upon existing expertise while providing counsel in other areas of law in a collaborative and engaging environment. Additional responsibilities include managing litigation and investigations and advising on government contracts and regulations, research integrity, agreements, privacy, intellectual property, and environmental law.
Core Duties:
Work with SLAC, University, and Human Resources management to contribute functional employment law expertise to support business objectives.
Manage and lead investigations, claims and litigation, including by engaging and overseeing outside counsel in employment law and other subject areas as needed.
Coordinate and oversee responses to discovery requests, subpoenas, Office of Inspector General requests, and Freedom of Information Act requests.
Advise on and develop policies, guidelines, and training materials in partnership with Human Resources and other Laboratory departments.
Research and advise on a variety of federal, state, and local laws and regulations applicable to SLAC, including contractual obligations imposed under SLAC's federal contract, such as those in the Federal Acquisition Regulation.
Collaborate with peers at other national laboratories, universities, and in the Department of Energy to manage risks in a variety of areas.
Develop and implement strategies for providing accurate and timely guidance on a wide range of legal issues.
Education & Experience:
Applicants should have a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
Required Skills:
Ability to effectively counsel Laboratory and University leadership on legal risks by providing practical, solution-oriented advice.
Strong judgment, commitment to client service, and excellent communication and presentation skills.
Ability to provide timely advice in a variety of legal areas and settings to senior management and executives.
Preferred Experience:
Experience advising on California employment laws.
Experience in managing litigation and disputes.
Experience working at a federally funded or government contractor environment, such as a national laboratory or federally funded research and development center, university, or similar scientific organization.
Knowledge of government contracts laws and regulations.
Working knowledge of data privacy issues.
Experience in actively managing outside counsel.
Certifications and Licenses:
Applicants should also be a member of the California Bar, be able to become one shortly, or, if licensed out-of-state, qualify as "in-house counsel" under the applicable California bar rules. Requirements include excellence in academic credentials, writing, analytical and communication skills as well as good judgment and a practical approach to solving legal problems. Applicants must be comfortable with technology, committed to teamwork, responsive and have a proven record of providing the highest quality client service.

The expected pay range for this position is $270,000 to $320,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
