Job Summary:
The Senior Director of Public Safety (SDPS) is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, managing, and directing public safety operations and initiatives of Cherokee Nation. With a particular emphasis on managing and coordinating with the Directors of Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Service, Emergency Communications, and Fire Rescue, the SDPS is also responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for citizens, faculty, staff, visitors, and assets of the Cherokee Nation; ensuring the department plays a critical role in emergency mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
Job Duties:
Leads and manages the Cherokee Nation public safety function, a 24/7/365 operation. Ensures adherence to Tribal, Federal, and State laws. Develops and implements comprehensive public safety programs, policies, and procedures. Assists with managing and administering the public safety department budget. Continuously improves the department's services to meet or exceed internal and external expectations. Mentors and develops department staff to promote exceptional performance, personal growth, and career progression. Communications and Fire Rescue staff in mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery on matters which may pose a risk to citizen safety, safety to employees, communities, and Cherokee Nation facilities throughout the Reservation. Partners in developing, coordinating, and implementing the comprehensive emergency management plan coordinate with local agencies and ensure an appropriate response to the full spectrum of potential incidents and emergencies in the Reservation. Maintains on-call status for incidents and emergencies affecting the Cherokee Nation communities. Reports to the Cherokee Nation Marshal and coordinates efforts to assist the departments under the Marshal. Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages four (4) subordinate supervisors who supervise a total of five (5) to twenty (20) employees in the Department. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities following the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
Bachelor's degree from a 4-year college or university; no substitutions.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
At least two (2) years of experience in a related field.
COMPUTER SKILLS
An individual should know Database software, Human Resource systems, Internet software, Inventory software, Order processing systems, Payroll systems, Project Management software, Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets the requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
Must possess the National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications below:
ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System
ICS-200: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
ICS-300: Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents
ICS-400: Advanced ICS for Command and General Staff
IS-700: National Incident Management System An Introduction
IS-800: National Response Framework, An Introduction
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
