    Based in Hartford, Connecticut, the Senior Counsel will be a critical part of a team of attorneys responsible for supporting Hartford Investment Management Company, a registered investment adviser with approximately $108 Billion in assets under management. The Senior Counsel will be responsible for providing advice on a wide range of investment matters, with an emphasis on commercial mortgage lending, real estate equity investments, other real estate and alternative investment transactions and various asset management issues associated with a large real estate portfolio. The Senior Counsel will routinely interact with senior investment professionals within HIMCO, in-house and outside counsel, and other members of The Hartford's Law Department.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide counsel to senior investment professionals on a broad range of legal issues related to investment transactions in a variety of investment sectors and asset classes, principally commercial mortgage lending (including construction lending), real estate equity investments, real estate funds and asset management matters.

    • Draft, negotiate, and coordinate application documentation for commercial mortgage loan program and term sheets for joint venture equity investments.

    • Negotiate loan and equity investment documentation, and coordinate overall investment closing process, including closing process for third party clients purchasing interests in CMLs.

    • Assist with SEC, insurance and banking regulatory matters and maintain knowledge of trends in the industry and familiarity with applicable regulations.

    Qualifications

    • A minimum of 5 years of relevant investment transactional experience, preferably at a top law firm or institutional lender.

    • Juris doctorate (J.D.) required; CT Bar license preferred, or must qualify as authorized house counsel in compliance with Connecticut's rules.

    • Significant experience in commercial real estate lending (including construction lending), joint venture equity, private real estate funds and other financial/investment transactions.

    • Experience in real estate matter workouts and restructurings helpful.

    • Innovative and efficient, with ability to interact on a daily basis with seasoned investment professionals and communicate on substantive issues with eye toward potential solutions.

    • Self-starter, self-directed, highly motivated, and able to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.

    • Demonstrated ability and success in an environment with constantly changing priorities.

    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

    • Sound judgment, risk assessment and decision-making skills.

    • Team player with excellent verbal and written communications skills.

    Compensation

    The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

    $142,480 - $213,720
