    Job Summary:

    Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking an early career content creator and science writer as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

    Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance ORNL's mission of delivering scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security and provide economic benefit to the nation. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from ORNL Communications staff employed directly by the research laboratory. Pay, Benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

    Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy DOE clearance requirements.

    Responsibilities

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Writes feature articles, science highlights, news releases, website and newsletter content, video scripts, presentations, fact-sheet content, internal communications products, and other materials that align with communications strategic plans while clearly and effectively communicating research findings, technical developments, and key programmatic messages

    • Organizes and analyzes information from various scientific and often highly technical sources, including interviews with subject matter experts and review of published scientific papers, to produce written materials in concise and approachable language without loss of technical meaning

    • Collaborates with technical editors to ensure adherence to grammar and style guidelines

    • Assists in the creation of multimedia content for web, social media, and other uses

    • Collaborates with staff from Executive Communications to provide needed support and required products

    • Suggests visual material in support of scientific and promotional information needs; work with graphic designers, photographers, and videographers to develop attractive and high-impact visual products

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Ability to understand and communicate about complex science and technology-related topics and work with senior scientists and managers to produce timely, interesting, and compelling content that readily conveys the importance and excitement of the work at ORNL

    • Demonstrated verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

    • Knowledge of effective writing techniques for a variety of media as well as a knowledge of technical language, usage, and style conventions

    • Experience interpreting, organizing, and analyzing data from multiple sources

    • Demonstrated organizational, recordkeeping, and coordination skills

    • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple levels of management or scientific personnel

    • Demonstrated ability to work independently on multiple time-constrained projects and to successfully complete each

    • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, a science or other related field

    • Minimum 1-2 years of relevant experience.

    • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q Clearance.
