POSITION SUMMARY
The Safety & Compliance Manager is responsible to plan, direct, and administer the Company's Safety, Workers Compensation, and DOT Compliance programs to provide a safe work environment for all employees that supports efficient operations and regulatory compliance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety Culture/Infrastructure
Assesses workplace accidents, incidents and injuries to identify causal factors and develop recommendation/strategies to prevent recurrence.
Administers the workers compensation program, including establishing accurate and timely reporting procedures. Maintains effective working relations with Occupational Health Clinics in all locations, and works with the insurance carrier to ensure effective claims management, reduction of lost employee time claims, and detection of unjust claims. Develops and administers a light duty work assignment program to support employees working with restrictions.
Participates in the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperates with the preparation of material and evidence for organizational use in hearings, lawsuits and insurance investigations.
Develops, conducts and documents safety training for all employees as required by OSHA guidelines and industry best practices.
Develops general safety policies and procedures to be followed by company personnel in compliance with Local, State and Federal Occupational Safety (OSHA) rules and regulations, as well as industry best practices.
Consults with all departments on design and use of equipment, workflow, and a broad array of safety programs.
Inspects organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident, security and health hazards. Recommends corrective or preventive measures where needed.
Ensures that the HAZMAT requirements are adhered to. Keeps managers and employees alerted as to the hazards of working with toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals and any other hazardous substances.
Performs other related duties as assigned and/or identified as needed.
Compliance and Reporting:
Ensures that all locations meet Federal and State posting guidelines.
Develops programs and procedures to ensure that regulations of various administering agencies are complied with, including OSHA, EPA and Department of Transportation.
Conducts workplace audits of each business location to identify areas that need to be addressed.
Ensures that required reports are submitted to regulatory agencies and ensures that safety records and files are maintained. This includes workers compensation, OSHA reports and logs, DOT Driver qualification files, Drug and Alcohol Test reporting etc.
Maintains safety files and records.
Conducts annual motor vehicle record checks of employees who drive for the company as a principal duty.
Performs other related duties as assigned and/or as needed.
Company Representation:
Represents the organization in community or industry groups and programs.
Keeps abreast of new legislation and developments in areas of responsibility and conveys information to appropriate company leaders.
Represents the company and it's affiliates in all inspections and interactions with governmental agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in Occupational Safety and Health (or a related field) preferred. Relevant professional training/certification is a strong plus (e.g., Certified Hazard Control Manager, Occupational Safety and Health Technician).
5+ years demonstrated Safety/Compliance leadership experience preferred, including development and implementation of programs reflecting "best practices" perspective.
Experience in heavy duty truck dealership industry preferred.
Strong working knowledge of OSHA & DOT regulations, with a proven record of supportive training and maintaining safety standards
Ability to partner with leadership at all levels and influence others tactfully. Communications and actions reflect a "teamwork" approach rather than setting up an "us/them" relationship.
Strong MS Office Suite skills, and proven knowledge of workplace safety systems and applications
Strong continuous improvement mentality.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Sensitivity to confidential information is essential.
Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills. Strong presentation skills with the ability to succinctly explain complex issues.
Ability to travel as required to all company facilities, including overnight travel, sometimes with little notice.
