    Position Highlights

    Position Summary:

    The Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist (CDIS) reviews inpatient medical records while patients are still in-house (concurrent review) for proper documentation as it relates to revenue cycle elements (i.e. DRG, Length of Stay ,Severity of Illness, etc). The Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist (CDIS) collaborates with clinicians, physicians and HIM coding staff to ensure timely and accurate documentation and provides training and education as needed. The CDIS role is complex and requires expert knowledge of clinical care and applicable coding guidelines, as well as an ability to communicate effectively with the clinical team.

    Work Schedule:

    Forty hours per week, Monday through Friday. The hours per day may vary in order to accommodate the census needs of the facility.

    Education/Experience:

    • Graduate from a CCNE or NLN accredited nursing program is required. Graduate from an approved nursing program is acceptable.

    • Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.

    • Four years related inpatient clinical experience preferred. Knowledge of hospital revenue cycle and the electronic health record strongly preferred.

    • Ability to work independently, self-motivate, and adapt to the changing healthcare arena.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, analytical thinking, and problem solving with strong attention to detail.

    • Proficiency in computer use, including database and spreadsheet analysis, presentation programs, word processing, and Internet search preferred.

    Licensure/Certification:

    • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of South Dakota and/or meeting the requirements of Multi-state licensure is required.

    • Membership in a professional organization preferred.

    • Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) from the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (ACDIS) required. If not certified, will be required to obtain certification within two years of employment.
