  • The Tape Solutions R&D group at SGR North America is searching for a talented Research Engineer II to join their team. The candidate will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze results, and present the findings in both written and oral formats in the areas of formulation, mixing, coating, foaming, web handling, and industrial scale-up processes. While not expected to be an expert in all these areas, the candidate must be able to research and understand new areas of polymer technology quickly. The responsibility will be laboratory experiments, pilot production tools at the R&D center, and scale-up in collaboration with our manufacturing sites. The candidate should enjoy learning, problem solving, and potentially designing new processes and process technologies.

    Essential Functions

    • Carries major projects through to successful completion with assistance from supervisor.

    • Guidance on project objectives and technical approach are provided but autonomous execution is expected.

    • Projects involve the extension of present or new technology in one or more areas, involving improvement and/or development of products, processes, techniques, and fundamental knowledge.

    • Projects are assigned by supervisor and are several months to years in duration.

    • Fabricates product prototypes and characterizes samples using various analytical techniques based on experiments designed by other engineers in the group in support of their projects.

    • Delivers high quality results rapidly and in the format requested by the project manager.

    • Manages and documents projects effectively under minimal supervision by the direct manager.

    • Data and results to be presented in oral and written form.

    • Includes the generation of project timelines/plans, technical memos, research reports, and presentations to internal customers, project teams, and/or management.

    • Marketing and manufacturing supports: may include pilot and production trials, and travel to manufacturing sites or customers for support.

    • Proactively seeks out all information needed to conduct the trials successfully and delivers the results in the form requested by the customer.

    Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 3+ years of experience or entry level MS degree with thesis in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Plastic Engineering, or other related disciplines.

    • Hands-on experience with polymer formulation, processing and characterization is required.

    • Industrial R&D experience preferred.

    • Experience in rubber technologies, silicone materials and formulation preferred.

    • Project management skills preferred.
