  • The Department of Education, Leadership, Foundations, and Policy (EDLF) within the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia is searching for a Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure track).? The successful candidate will work within the Motivate Lab ( ~~~/ ).? ?

    The successful candidate will undertake a program of scholarly activities related to the mission of Motivate Lab and broader EDLF department.? This includes conducting quantitative and mixed methods research studies, writing grant proposals, publishing results of studies and presenting findings at peer-reviewed conferences, and making other scholarly disseminations of findings to the field.? The successful candidate will liaise between university-based staff, school personnel, and external collaborators, help ensure the goals and objectives of the projects are met on time and within budget, recruit participants, create and revise study materials, participate in scholarly activities (e.g., authoring manuscripts and conference presentations), administer motivational/learning mindset assessments, conduct focus groups and interviews.???

    ?The selected scholar will also lead research on the continued iterative development of learning mindset interventions designed to support students from historically marginalized backgrounds. There is a specific need for a scholar with experience implementing and evaluating social-psychological interventions as part of randomized controlled trials. Necessary skill-sets include the ability to implement advanced statistical techniques to understand how learning contexts impact the efficacy of interventions randomized at the student level. Additionally, an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of stereotype threat and how it impacts student motivation across the K-12 and higher-ed landscape is important. Thus, a successful candidate would be adept at examining socio-cultural and contextual factors that impact student success, particularly for students from historically marginalized backgrounds.

    The Research Assistant Professor demonstrates a preliminary, but growing record of scholarly activities.? This includes peer-reviewed publications, scholarly presentations and other disseminations of research, and establishment of an emerging national reputation.

    Required Qualifications:??

    • PhD or EdD in Psychology, Education, Educational Psychology, or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment

    ? Preferred Qualifications:?

    • At least five years of experience implementing and evaluating social-psychological interventions that are randomized at the student level, preferably within STEM disciplines

    • Experience designing and delivering high quality professional development opportunities for higher education faculty on the value and importance of learning mindsets

    • Knowledge of how stereotype threat impacts student motivation and achievement, and experience evaluating effots that mitigate stereotype threat

    • Track record of implementing, evaluating, and publishing intervention research that has demonstrated effects for students of color, first-generation students, and/or students from low-income backgrounds

    This position will require the individual to collaborate with faculty and stakeholders on site in Charlottesville, VA and other areas within the state of Virginia.
