  • What You Will Do

    We are seeking an outstanding student from a diverse academic and cultural background who is driven to make a difference. This internship provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's engineering education. The Maintenance and Site Services Data Systems and Technologies Group is seeking a student to support the development and deployment of remotely operated as well autonomous platforms around Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    We are striving to make inspection of vital infrastructure safer, cheaper, more efficient and repeatable. You will have the opportunity to work with the latest commercially available technology as well as developing custom platforms when necessary to meet the mission need.

    Activities examples include

    • Integration of various payload and sensor suites with robotic, Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Drones/Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS). Examples: Hyperspectral/multispectral, thermal/Infrared, Ultraviolet, Ultrasonic, LiDAR, etc.

    • Testing and evaluation of platform and sensor suite combinations for asset condition determination, utility condition assessments, and infrastructure inspection purposes.

    • Development of communication methods for the operation of multiple units simultaneously and autonomously.

    • Development of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to utilize various payloads and automate analysis of imagery/data.

    • Application of collected data and imagery into photogrammetric and LiDAR based models, digital twin and Building Information Models.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in any engineering discipline. Engineering degree in greatest demand include Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

    • Enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester (or equivalent of full-time enrollment).

    • Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale. Note: Students must provide the program coordinator with current, official transcripts annually to remain eligible. See the Annual Transcript & Salary Review Process section for additional information.

    • Pass a new employment drug test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

    • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.

    • Basic knowledge along with any class project experience with analysis or testing in one or more of the following STEM areas: Coding, Manufacturing, Robotics, Communications, Materials, Math, Data acquisition and analysis.

    • Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written communications.

    Desired Qualifications:

    Student selected for UGS internship in engineering and applied sciences is most competitive when possessing some of the following knowledge and skills:

    • Eagerness and demonstrated record of working as a member of small teams to accomplish tasks safely and efficiently

    • Experience designing, fabricating, and assembling electronic, mechanical, or robotic systems

    • Computer programming in support of engineering design, data acquisition, analysis, robot control, artificial intelligenc or machine learning

    • Interest in the areas of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Human Machine Interface (HMI) operation, LabVIEW, and communication protocols

    • Computer Aided Design (CAD)

    • Basic knowledge of, and the ability to, fabricate, test, and document electronic control systems

    • Laboratory or shop experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safety, security, and quality

    Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) .     No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
