UPMC Hamot's Women's Hospital is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join the Mom-Baby unit!
The Mother-Baby Unit is a Level 3 nursery with 24 beds, offering family-centered couplet care. Our skilled nurses provide a wide range of maternal and infant care, from blood administration and IV medications to lactation support and patient education. We prioritize trust, assess individual needs, and ensure a safe transition to parenthood and home.
At least one year of nursing experience required.
Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Purpose: The Professional Staff Nurse, a Registered Nurse, is a key member of the care delivery team. They set care standards, hold responsibility and accountability for nursing care, and manage patient care activities. Their role involves leadership, collaboration, and supervision, working closely with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes. They are committed to the community and the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
Develops and maintains productive relationships internally and externally, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
Understands cultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthy relationships.
Maintains a balance between work and personal life, models safe work hours, time management, and a healthy lifestyle. Communicates safety hazards to peers and management.
Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles and applies them in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff.
Provides detailed teaching to guide patients and families through care episodes and transitions.
Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues, and may serve as a preceptor.
Creates an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous development by seeking feedback and improving practice.
Applies the nursing process within Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment.
Formulates daily goals and care plans involving patients as partners, considering their holistic needs.
Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues.
Practices solid communication skills, articulates patient conditions to other care providers, and recommends changes in care.
Ensures comprehensive patient documentation to promote communication between caregivers.
Incorporates national and organizational goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
Builds healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues to create a compassionate patient-focused experience.
Demonstrates accountability for professional development to improve practice and patient care quality. Actively participates in unit-based shared governance, goal setting, and supports change processes.

Minimum of one year nursing experience, BSN preferred.
Previous med/surg or postpartum experience required.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide care and interact appropriately with patients of all ages.
Understands principles of growth and development over the lifespan.
Assesses and interprets patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.
Establishes and maintains positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
Works productively and effectively in a complex environment, handling multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
Exhibits good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities related to patient care.
Demonstrates critical thinking skills to lead others in applying the nursing process. Possesses mobility, visual, and manual dexterity.
Maintains physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
UPMC offers flexible options, including night or weekend shifts with premium pay. Requires at least 6 months of nursing experience and may need orientation during regular business hours. Interested candidates should inform their recruiter during the interview process.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
Registered Nurse (RN) Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
UPMC approved national certification preferred.
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
