  • What You Will Do

    Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting advanced research in numerous areas related to national security. Additionally, it is a center for research in a wide range of scientific disciplines, including space exploration, geophysics, renewable energy, supercomputing, medicine, and nanotechnology.

    Detonator Production (DP) is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate, and is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precise, safe, and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management organizations to deliver on challenging national security objectives. DP upholds vigorous principles including teamwork, personal integrity, continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety, security, and building a respectful workplace.

    This position is based in the Detonator Production DP-5 Production Integration Operations Support Group, specifically with the Production Planning team. The selected candidate will assist DP-5 with the implementation and support of the Production Planning and Control (PPC) Framework. The planning and work control team manages all detonator production work planning, scheduling, and manufacturing workflow throughout the production agency (PA) manufacturing life cycle at Technical Area (TA) 22, including manufacturing War Reserve (WR) High- Explosive (HE) detonator products. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up work orders and providing status to master work schedule and resource and capacity planning for forecasted work.

    The PPC functions that this candidate will be responsible for require technical understanding of manufacturing systems, processes, and tools at TA-22, such as Primavera P6, the DP Secure Operations Management System (SOMS) and Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

    This position will be filled at the Production Control and Analysis Level 2 or 3, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

    Production Planner 2 ($69,500 - $110,300)

    This position you will develop schedules from ground up under the supervision of the RLM/Team Lead. Evaluate and perform resource analysis & Work Center deconfliction. Provide support, scheduling assistance and education to project team members. Develop schedule templates for future use. Establish and maintain effective relationships with all project team members. Review and verify all project-related scheduling information with project teams. Submit and present schedules and progress reports at project meetings.

    Production Planner 3 ($83,900 - $136,600)

    In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate will be expected to:

    Apply broad and diversified knowledge of manufacturing processes, product definition and structure plans for the most efficient production flow. Work with operational manufacturing and quality personnel regarding production planning in regards to capacity forecasting and development of new product manufacturing planning. Communicate production throughput needs with the Production and Supply Chain team assisting in procurement needs for on time procurement and delivery. Work on unusually significant, unique or complex issues, supports production changes along with the production scheduler to develop solutions based on planned analysis and throughput.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements

    • Knowledge of production and inventory control and planning methods.

    • Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.

    • Knowledge of inventory management and control practices, including cycle counting and physical inventory management practices

    • Knowledge of resource planning and optimization practices as well as multi-organization resource integration processes

    • Awareness and willing to learn of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

    • Awareness and willing to learn of supply chain management and resource management practices.

    Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

    Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Prior P6 training and knowledge will be desired.

    • Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements

    • Demonstrated experience achieving required objectives in a production environment

    • Demonstrated experience applying continuous improvement concepts

    • Demonstrated knowledge of conduct of operations principles.

    • Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar).

    • Experience in expert level planning, defining project scope, and planning through collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs) and senior project managers.

    • Expert level knowledge and experience in supporting tactical planning, and technical or operational work.

    • Proven ability to successfully plan, organize, lead and monitor a wide variety of activities on a day-to-day basis with the knowledge to assist SME's in de-conflicting work center and resource issues while continuing to meet production needs.

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.
