  • The robotics and remote systems group (R&RS) at Applied Materials division at Argonne National Laboratory is carrying out R&D on robotic automations for various applications in unstructured environments and manufacturing. In support of the programs, R&RS is seeking to hire a pre-doctoral appointee to work on the development of telerobotic system and robotic digital platforms for tasks in unstructured environments. The successful candidate will collaborate with the R&RS team for the technology development of a robotic systems and solutions for various use cases in industrial, scientific, and other energy applications.

    The candidate will participate in all phases of the robotic systems solution development including system design, software frameworks, digital mockups, and various application platforms of robotic digital twin platforms for various projects and broad applications in industrial, scientific, and other energy applications.

    • Application task analysis, design requirements, and system design.

    • Development of digital mockups of the application environments and equipment.

    • Development of digital twin platforms for development, training and operations.

    • Design and prototyping of robotic systems including manipulators and mobile robots for applications.

    • Implementation of robotic control systems including dynamic control.

    • Development of advanced telerobotic methods including bilateral control, virtual fixtures, and teleautonomy.

    • Development of mobile manipulation methods.

    • Development of multi-modal operator interfaces for teleautonomous robotic systems.

    • Desing and implementation of integrated robotic operation system including task, path, motion planning and automation workflow.

    • Conversion of the robot operation system from ROS 1 to ROS 2 base.

    • Management and maintenance of robotic digital twin software repository.

    Position Requirements

    • The successful candidate is expected to have strong capabilities in software development and experiences to independently carry out telerobotics, intelligent robotics, and mixed-reality system development:

    • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science with robotics emphasis.

    • Formal training and development experience in design and control of robotic manipulator and mobile robot systems.

    • Capability in operating system programming and maintenance with robot operating system (ROS 1 and ROS 2).

    • Experience with systems integration with 3D sensing and virtual-/augmented-reality simulation.

    • Knowledge in discrete-event automation workflow programming.
