    Description:

    Responsible for the collection of blood samples from inpatients throughout the hospital. Also responsible for receiving specimens in the laboratory, loading on the track system for processing, centrifigation of specimens when appropriate. Position requires an experienced, highly-skilled technician who can work with a minimum of supervision. Must have kind, caring, compassionate demeanor. Must be a team player and responsible for reporting to work as scheduled.

    • The Phlebotomist:

    • Properly identifies the inpatients using the hospital identification wristband and scanner

    • Properly identifies and labels patients specimens for Blood Bank testing using the positive patient identification system.

    • Uses appropriate aseptic technique to draw blood cultures

    • Clearly and accurately labels all specimens immediately after venipuncture and completes necessary documentation

    • Evaluates specimen adequacyReceives specimens in the computer and delivers them to the appropriate department

    • Monitors inventory levels and follows appropriate protocol for re-ordering supplies

    • Deletes or cancels orders as necessary with full documentation of reason and colleague they spoke with.

    • Collates requests, answers the telephone, delivers specimens to appropriate department and operates the pneumatic tube

    • Consistently assumes responsibility for calls, correctly answers questions, directs inquiries and takes messages

    • Collects TIMED and STAT tests within designated time period

    • Maintains supplies, carts, workstations in a neat, clean and orderly manner

    • Performs other related duties as required

    Qualifications :

    • High School Diploma/Equivalent required

    • Phlebotomy Certification preferred
