    UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join the Medical Respiratory tory Intermediate Unit!

    This position is Full-Time, 12-hour shifts rotating days and nights.

    One year of direct patient care experience required.

    Title and Salary will be based upon education and experience.

    The Patient Care Technician Sr. provides routine patient care and supports departmental services according to established policies and directives from nurses or physicians, ensuring high-quality patient care. This role requires completion of senior care duties, including training and annual competencies. Core responsibilities involve assisting with daily living activities (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning), point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose), taking weights and vital signs, managing telemetry monitors, and preventive measures (TEDs/SCDs). Additional tasks include performing simple dressings, handling restraints, bladder scanning, specimen collection, removing peripheral IV catheters and Foley catheters, phlebotomy/venipuncture, and preparing patients for transport. The technician must also achieve and maintain competency in advanced skills such as basic arrhythmia interpretation, complex wound care, conducting 12-lead EKGs, and managing NG tubes, depending on departmental needs.

    Responsibilities:

    • Communicates effectively with healthcare team members.

    • Reports equipment malfunctions and communicates with other departments.

    • Contributes to unit activities such as responding to call lights, telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

    • Performs core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs, point-of-care testing, taking weights and vital signs, telemetry monitor management, and preventive measures.

    • Performs tasks like dressing, handling restraints, bladder scanning, specimen collection, IV and Foley catheter removal, phlebotomy, and patient transport.

    • Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.

    • Provides feedback to the RN, reports changes in patient status, and instructs patients and families.

    • Receives and acts on feedback, identifies learning needs, and improves knowledge and skills.

    • Participates in self-review, projects, and committee work.

    • Suggests and supports departmental changes and quality initiatives.

    • Adheres to policies, procedures, and safety protocols, and documents patient care properly.

    • Transports cardiac monitored patients and completes clerical functions as needed.

    • Achieves and maintains advanced skills like basic arrhythmia, complex wound care, 12-lead EKGs, and NG tube management based on department needs.

    • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.

    • Performs other assigned duties.

    • High school diploma or equivalent.

    • Must also have either:

    • 1 year of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title.

    • 1 year of experience (defined above) and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation.

    • 1 year of experience (defined above) and completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.

    • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire?

    • Successful completion of patient care technician senior class.

    • Successful completion of basic information system training.

    • Microcomputer experience preferred.

    • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

    • Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

    • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required.

    • May, in the course of their duties, be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients. Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
