The School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVa) seeks candidates for an Academic General Faculty (AGF) position in the Department of Engineering and Society ( ~~~ ).
The primary responsibilities for this tenure-ineligible position include teaching and service to the department, university, and professional community. The appointment rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Compensation is contingent upon experience. This position will have renewable three-year contracts. This position involves teaching three courses per semester as part of the Science, Technology, and Society Program in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The primary responsibility of the STS Program is to teach STS, ethics, and communication to undergraduate engineering students.
The Department of Engineering and Society is an interdisciplinary department, with faculty trained in various social sciences and humanities. Some are engineers. Our research, teaching, and engagement with multiple communities aim to illuminate the ways in which science, technology, and engineering have social consequences, and to explore and analyze science, technology, and engineering as social endeavors shaped by social conditions. Our research, teaching, and public engagement address sociotechnical challenges and inform the role of engineers and other stakeholders in their research and design practices. Three of the 3-credit courses we offer are required in the school of engineering's undergraduate curriculum. Those include Engineering Ethics; STS and Engineering Practice; and The Engineer, Ethics, and Professional Responsibility.
This position is based in Charlottesville, VA at our principal location. Candidates without a PhD will be considered for Lecturer ranks. Candidates at professorial ranks must have received a doctorate or equivalent in STS, Philosophical Ethics, Anthropology, Engineering Education, or related fields by the start of their appointment. Evidence of a commitment to high-impact scholarship, undergraduate-level teaching and advising excellence, professional and university service, and mentoring are expected.
Candidates with teaching interests in the following areas will be preferred: Character development, macro and micro ethics and values; technology ethics; STS or social dimensions of engineering practice, or ethics for engineering professionals. Also preferred are candidates with a record of teaching excellence. We are especially hoping to find someone who can actively engage our new Engineering Character Strength Initiative.
In conjunction with these positions, senior graduate students are eligible and encouraged to consider the UVA Engineering Rising Scholars program. This program is designed to encourage early-career scholars to pursue a career in academia by supporting their postdoctoral work before beginning in a tenure-track position at the University of Virginia.
