The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) (~~~/) in the UVA School of Medicine and the NCI designated University of Virginia Cancer Center (UVACC) are jointly seeking applicants for a tenured or tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor to conduct research on cancer disparities, preferably with a focus on racial and ethnic disparities, that influence inequities in cancer incidence, health-related quality of life, and/or survival . The successful faculty candidate will be appointed within PHS to conduct scientific research and contribute to our leading research program initiative to reduce and eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in cancer risk and outcomes in the communities served by the UVA Cancer Center. Senior candidates must have had success in obtaining federally funded research in health inequities in the field of cancer prevention and control. Applicants at the assistant professor level must demonstrate promise in establishing a federally funded research program in this area. All candidates must have a proven track record of community engagement and a scholarly record of collaboration in multidisciplinary investigator teams informed by community outreach and engagement principles and practice.
The UVACC is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, and serves a large racially and ethnically diverse catchment area ranging from northern VA to Southern and Southwest VA, and includes areas in West Virginia. Throughout our 30-plus years of existence, the UVACC has continued to grow in excellence. High priority scientific research areas include: socio-demographic cancer disparities , access to cancer screening and follow-up care, prevention and control of cancers (e.g., colorectal cancer, lung cancer) and risk factors (e.g., tobacco, obesity) prevalent in UVACC's catchment area, dissemination and implementation of evidence-based cancer control programs, and the care of cancer survivors in diverse settings . These accolades are in recognition of our state-of-the-art multidisciplinary clinical teams and advancements through research in all major cancers. We attract patients from around Virginia, the U.S., and the world. The depth and breadth of the UVA Cancer's research and service was recently recognized by the NCI with the award of comprehensive status (effective February 2022). This new faculty position will have full access to the Cancer Center's shared research cores and our robust Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (OCOE) to support community collaborative research, and a competitive start-up package to support research planning and development. Over the last decade the OCOE has built strong community partnerships with stakeholders which have resulted in numerous funded collaborations aimed at reducing cancer risk and improving the lives of cancer survivors in our region.
The Department of Public Health Sciences PHS offers a vibrant academic home with access to a rich datasets and support services for research including geospatial analysis, advanced expertise in healthcare claims data, digital health and telemedicine, public health genomics, and community engagement. provides comprehensive and multi-disciplinary scientific and analytical services to the University of Virginia School of Medicine through its Divisions of Biomedical Informatics; Biostatistics; Translational Research and Applied Statistics; and Patient Outcomes, Policy and Epidemiologic Research. The Department offers two master degrees, an MS in Clinical Research and an MPH. Successful candidates will contribute to the design and implementation of the graduate education curriculum; teach intermediate and advanced graduate level methods courses, conduct research, and advance scholarship in their area of expertise.

Successful candidates will have a PhD or other doctoral degree in Public Health or a related field, with evidence of innovative peer-reviewed research in cancer prevention and control. An exemplary record of peer-reviewed publications relevant to racial and ethnic cancer disparities in the U.S.
National recognition of scholarship advancing cancer prevention and control, and population health in academic societies and participation in external peer review panels.
Success moving scientific discovery into new research directions and applications in patients and populations.
Experience working with community advisory boards and stakeholders in an engaged research process.
A collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork, change and innovation.
Ability to pursue high standards related to one's research, clinical investigations and service, and other areas of responsibility.
