The Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia invites applications for an Open Rank General (non-tenure track) nine-month faculty position in Business History , beginning in the summer of 2025. This position will focus on the teaching of business and economic history, as informed by historical analysis. As such, applicants should generally have a PhD or other terminal degree in History, Business History, Economic History, or a related field.
General faculty applicants are expected to bring something distinctive to the School, such as outstanding teaching, high visibility, and effectiveness in working with practicing managers and executives, or a particularly noteworthy research niche. General faculty will be on either a Teaching Track or a Practice Track. For the Teaching Track, primary responsibilities would be teaching and developing curricular materials. For the Practice Track, primary responsibilities would be teaching in both MBA and Executive Education programs and writing with a view to influencing practice.
The Business History General Faculty will be expected to assume responsibilities for delivering elective courses for residential, executive and part time MBAs. The courses will support MBAs in reaching their full professional potential by increasing awareness of business history and relating such history to decisions they may face as business leaders. The assigned teaching load will be reflective of a full-time General Faculty. Darden delivers degree programs in Charlottesville, VA and Rosslyn, VA. The Business History General Faculty will be expected to teach in both locations.
As a global leader in the case method, experience in case-based teaching and learning is preferred. Darden's high engagement learning environment depends on the active participation of both students and faculty. The Business History General Faculty will be expected to utilize Socratic, student-centered methods, aligned with the rest of the school. Candidates will present evidence of proficiency in teaching, ideally by the case method.
