Job #2805687674
The Architectural History Department in the University of Virginia's School of Architecture (~~~/) invites applicants for a new faculty member, at the Associate or Full Professor rank, and with the administrative appointment as Chair of Architectural History. We seek a colleague who is pursuing innovative research in architectural history in any area of specialization, and who will bring collaborative leadership to the role of Chair, as well as demonstrated excellence to teaching and mentorship of students across our varied programs. Candidates with expertise in global histories of architecture and built landscapes prior to 1800 are especially invited to apply, as are candidates who engage cultural landscape studies and/or historic preservation. This is a unique opportunity to bring intellectual leadership as well as strategic and imaginative thinking to the collaborative work of envisioning shared futures for our department and its programs, including its ongoing engagement with colleagues and programs across the School of Architecture and the wider University.
Building on our singular status as the oldest architectural history program in the nation and our distinctive structure as one of four departments within the School of Architecture, we are actively reimagining the power and potential of architectural history, historic preservation, and public history for the future. We take full advantage of our unique location in a UNESCO world heritage site and in a university, a city, and a region that is at the center of national and international conversations, where innovative approaches to the history of the built environment are being tested, and where long-overlooked voices are inspiring new conversations. Our momentum in these arenas is amply demonstrated by the launch of our new Public History Fellowships (~~~) for graduate students, our long-standing community engaged work in digital heritage, and research endeavors galvanized by the Center for Cultural Landscapes (~~~) , including the Out(sider) Preservation Initiative (~~~/) . We have also been newly energized by the presence and contributions of our three recent Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows in Race, Place, and Equity (~~~) .
The Architectural History Department serves as an important curricular and intellectual bridge across the School of Architecture, not only supporting our own undergraduate (Bachelor of Architectural History (~~~) ) and graduate (Master of Architectural History (~~~) ) programs, but also contributing foundational courses to the School of Architecture's shared first-year curriculum and providing essential coursework for the Certificate in Historic Preservation (~~~) , which is available to graduate students across UVA. We are especially interested in candidates with the knowledge, energy, and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds, and we seek colleagues whose teaching, research, and leadership could contribute to the Art and Architectural History PhD Program (~~~) , which is jointly administered with our colleagues in Art History (~~~/) in the College of Arts & Sciences. Our faculty also have the opportunity to participate in the School of Architecture's interdisciplinary PhD in the Constructed Environment (~~~) . UVA offers rich opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement and University-wide collaboration through the Karsh Institute of Democracy (~~~/) , the Environmental Institute (~~~/) , the Institute for Humanities and Global Cultures (~~~/) , the Carter G. Woodson Institute (~~~/) , the recently launched Islamic Worlds Initiative (~~~.) , as well as ongoing, multi-faceted work in the Digital Humanities and Environmental Humanities.
The ideal candidate will have a history of successful, collegial, and thoughtful engagement with and service to the field. We seek a colleague who will be enthusiastic about contributing to the operations and scholarly life of the department, the School of Architecture, and University at large. The successful applicant will be appointed the Chair of the Architectural History Department for a term of three years (with potential for renewal) and to the tenured faculty (pending internal review) without term.
