    POSITION: OB/GYN Registered Nurse (RN)

    TYPE: Full-time

    SALARY: Commensurate with experience

    Summary:

    We are a multidisciplinary team consisting of an MD, three Midwives, two family partners, and a family planning specialist who provide care for a diverse population of people with OB/GYN needs. Our pregnant patients deliver at both Boston Medical Center and Brigham & Women's Hospital. The OBGYN nurse is an essential member of the clinical team, allowing for the delivery of coordinated, effective, and safe care to our patients and their families. In accordance with established Nursing Standards of Care, the OBGYN nurse will demonstrate initiative, knowledge, clinical skills, and complex care coordination to effectively manage patients from pregnancy diagnosis through the postpartum period, support the management of contraceptive services, and promote overall health by coordinating routine gynecologic and women's health screenings. Additionally, the OBGYN nurse will be a thought partner in designing new innovations and implementing new care models to improve care across patients' whole reproductive lifespan.

    50% Direct Patient Services - Obstetric

    Provides direct patient care utilizing the nursing process, including:

    • Case management of prenatal and postpartum patients including initial contact and evaluation of medical and social needs during pregnancy and postpartum period.
    • Conducting nurse-led intake visits of pregnant people entering prenatal care at Mattapan Community Health Center, to include: conducting a thorough review of past medical, surgical and obstetric history, ordering labs based on patient risk factors, placing ultrasound referrals, and identifying and managing common symptoms of pregnancy.
    • Collect specimens from patients for laboratory tests and notify requesting providers of abnormal results. Order reflex testing per protocol. Review providers' lab results daily and manage common abnormal labs by calling patients with results and sending appropriate medications.
    • Triage patients by telephone or directly as walk-ins to identify urgency and level of care needed; make appropriate referrals required for the management of patient care, including same-day ultrasounds, as needed.
    • Support patients presenting with possible miscarriage/pregnancy loss; refer for ultrasounds or specialty support as needed and coordinate post-pregnancy loss care.
    • Follow-up with patients within 24 hours on inpatient discharge & within 48 hours of ED visit notification
    • Provide or arrange for patient education, such as instructing patients in the proper use of medical equipment, medication administration, diabetic and hypertension teaching and other nursing care regimens. Review blood pressure and blood sugar logs and coordinate management with the primary OB provider, as needed.
    • Complete refill of medications for common prenatal conditions per protocol.
    • Support the design and implementation of group care visits for prenatal care and lactation. Co-facilitate groups with the prenatal provider once group prenatal care is established.

    Direct Patient Services - Gynecologic

    • Assists providers with procedures such as IUD insertion, endometrial biopsy, Colposcopy, suturing, as needed.
    • Collaborate on the design of, and oversee the implementation of an abnormal pap management tracking system to ensure appropriate follow-up with gynecology.
    • Ensure patients have timely access to appropriate contraceptive services, including coordinating the family planning specialist to order and manage contraceptive supplies.
    • Triage the urgency of gynecologic requests and referrals; manage MD's scheduled accordingly.

    30% Care Coordination and System Development

    • Support the coordination of our patients' complex care needs, including the timely entry to care, referrals and appointments to specialists, follow-through on recommendations from BMC/BWH maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and the postpartum period.
    • Collaborate with obstetric providers to compile perinatal patient outcomes and review prenatal and postpartum quality care metrics with the OBGYN team. Meet for one (1) hour per week a designated prenatal provider champion to review all new obstetric intakes to identify high-risk patients and manage prenatal provider schedules.
    • Organize and lead regular interdisciplinary case management team meetings to review medically and socially high-risk pregnant patients. Serve as the clinic point-person for obstetrics and gynecological questions from non-OB providers; support coordination of patients' complex care needs across obstetrics and primary care within the clinic. Coordinate with other members of the OBGYN team, including family partners, STI/STD clinic team members, and the family planner to provide wrap-around services for our obstetric panel.
    • Works on special programs/projects as assigned and/or interested.

    15% Administrative Support

    • Monitor needs for equipment repair/replacement and notify the nursing supervisor.
    • Assures appropriate scheduling and assists with patient flow.

    5% Educational/In-service

    • Maintains current licensure through in-service education and obtaining CEU's
    • Participates in individual or group teaching exercises.
    • Serves on committees as needed/assigned.
    • Precepts nursing and medical assistant students as needed.

    Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

    Requirements:

    • A graduate of an accredited School of Registered Nursing and current Commonwealth of Massachusetts Registration is required.
    • At least six months of experience as a Registered Nurse in a hospital or ambulatory care setting. Experience with obstetrics and/or gynecology is strongly desired.
    • Experience working with a diverse population, including migrants and refugees.
    • Current certification in CPR.
    • Excellent organizational skills, basic computer operations skills such as Word and Excel, as well as demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
    • Bilingual in Haitian-Creole is preferred
