As a Medical Abstractionist your responsibilities will include but aren't limited too:

• Analyzing patient records systematically to determine the principal diagnosis and level of service, as well as any additional significant diagnoses and procedures

• Ensuring accurate coding of diagnoses, level of service, and procedures in line with patient care documentation

• Serving as a resource for Department physicians on guidelines for patient care documentation and providing solutions for problem resolution

• Reviewing and interpreting the documentation of physician services in patient records to report physician activity for professional services billing

• Maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of current diagnosis and procedural coding practices and their application to the services provided by Department physicians

• Regularly reviewing and updating patient charts, abstracting diagnoses, physician services, and procedures

• Maintaining certification as a procedural coder and keeping up to date with changes in coding practices

• Responding to physician inquiries promptly with recommendations or options for problem resolution

• Ensuring accurate customer credit records and processing customer credit applications efficiently

• Monitoring customer accounts and taking appropriate action when necessary.

Requirements

The ideal Medical Abstractionist will have

• Proficiency in medical documentation and reporting procedures

• Experience in reviewing medical records and patient charts

• Knowledge of medical coverage, billing, and coding procedures, including ICD-10

• Proficiency in using Epic Software for maintaining patient records

• Excellent problem resolution skills, with the ability to diagnose problems effectively

• Strong decision-making skills and the ability to interpret complex medical information

• Familiarity with procedures related to component selection and R code

• Knowledge of PC operating systems and proficiency in using various software applications

• Excellent written communication skills and phone etiquette

• Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient records and diagnosis information

• Proficiency in creating charts and graphs to represent medical data

• Knowledge of hiring processes in the healthcare industry

• Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines
