  • Job Summary:

    Provides Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level emergency medical care and ambulance transport to patients who are ill or injured.

    Job Duties:

    Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. Assures all patients receive medical care to the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level according to the Cherokee Nation Ambulance Services Protocols. Performs Emergency Medical Technician level assessment of patients' trauma or medical related conditions. Operates an ambulance, responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, transports patients from scene to hospital and from one facility to another. Operates medical equipment at the EMT level as prescribed by EMS protocol and/or policy and procedures. Communicates clearly and professionally with the Communications Center and all other emergency agencies when responding to calls. Maintains adequate supplies and equipment as well as general upkeep and cleaning of the ambulance. Completes all required reports and documentation in timely manner on each shift according to Cherokee Nation Emergency Medical Services (EMS) policy and procedures. Complies with the applicable state, tribal and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety and confidentiality of any health services record they create, maintain, transfer, or destroy, whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium. Supporting diagnostic duties may include taking, recording and reporting to the registered nurse deviations in vital signs; collecting labeling, and transporting specimens to the laboratory. Assists physicians and advanced practitioners in a variety of diagnostic examinations by positioning and draping, and passing instructions and supplies, if requested. Changes simple, no-complex dressings. Applies simple dressings, binders, and heat and cold locally, observe, and report wound conditions and drainage if requested. Remove sutures after licensed nurses/professionals have performed assessment. Assist in screening patients, and gathering and recording specific information from patients. Takes and records vital signs and body measurements. Maintains proficiency in data entry in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Reports and completes data entry to ensure compliance with federal, state, and tribal regulations. Performs EKGs. Perform blood sugar testing. Reinforces instructions given to patients by the physician and registered nurses. Maintains a clean and safe environment for the patients. Sorts and replenishes supplies and linens as needed. Reports defective equipment and deficient supplies. Sets up and clean exam rooms. Performs clerical duties when appropriate such as, but not limited to printing summaries, patient labels, and face sheets, applying armbands, and discharging patients out of the computer. Respond to appropriate codes and Rapid Responses within the hospital and assist with resuscitative measures, as directed. Apply medical devices to the patient, as ordered. Perform routine ordering for supplies. Maintain appropriate maintenance/fuel reports including receipts. Ensure that each ambulance in the fleet is properly maintained including routine maintenance. Assist with intrafacility transport of patients. Initiate appropriate measures in emergencies when the physician is not immediately available, for example, take resuscitative measures in case of cardiac or respiratory arrest. Maintain and promote positive personal work habits, interpersonal skills, and public relationships with employees, administration, medical staff, patients, and families. Assist in the accomplishment of any initiative of the facility and or agency through the conscientious performance of assigned duties in support of the Cherokee Nation mission.

    Become certified and maintain certification of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC). Provides Human Resources with a copy of licensures, certifications, renewal of licensures, and certifications upon receipt thereof. Other duties may be assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    No supervisory responsibility is required.

    Qualifications:

    EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

    High school education; or general education degree (GED); and successful completion of Emergency Medical Technician program.with current license.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

    None required.

    COMPUTER SKILLS

    An individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software. Basic knowledge and data entry in Electronic Health Record. Data entry into state reporting for EMS.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Must possess and maintain an EMT License issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. Must possess Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Must possess National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) certifications maintain throughout employment.

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Must keep all knowledge and skills current through specific continued education as required by the Oklahoma State Department of Health/EMS Division for renewing licensure.

    OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

    The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).

    Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
