Histology Technician

Job Description

• Prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination and analysis by pathologists. They work under the supervision of a pathologist and technologist. Their responsibilities include:

• Specimen collection

• Picking up surgical specimens on a schedule, checking them for acceptability, and recording their receipt

• Tissue processing

• Examining, fixing, and processing tissue to preserve samples

• Tissue preparation

• Cutting tissue samples with a microtome or cryostat, surrounding them with paraffin wax, and mounting them on slides

• Staining

• Using special stains to emphasize abnormalities and make specific cells and structures visible under a microscope

• Quality control

• Recognizing factors that can affect procedures and results, and taking action when necessary

• Labeling and tracking

• Labeling, entering, and tracking all tested specimens processed.
