    Hematopathology Coordinator

    Job Description:

    Job Summary: The Hematopathology Coordinator will provide logistical and administrative support to the fast-paced hematopathology division and will interact extensively with hematopathologists, hematopathology fellows, pathology residents, laboratory personnel, and clinicians. While chiefly an administrative role, the hematopathology coordinator will work closely with pathologists and will, if interested, have opportunity to become familiar with the common clinical features and pathologic findings of many common hematologic malignancies. The position is well-suited to a detail-oriented candidate who wants to work directly with patient data and play an essential role in delivering patient care.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    1. Answers phone calls and emails to the Hematopathology Service: Takes accurate messages and directs calls/emails to the appropriate person.

    2. Collates specimens (bone marrow biopsies, flow cytometry, aspirate smears, cytogenetic results, peripheral blood smears) from multiple areas of the department.

    3. Coordinates cases and handles reports related to weekly intra- and interdepartmental hematopathology and cytogenetics conferences

    4. Transcribes laboratory results and hematopathology reports into the Information System.

    5. Accesses and prepares outside laboratory results for hematopathologist review.

    6. Requests and tracks additional pathologic materials from other institutions.

    7. Works with hematopathologists and pathology trainees to improve workflow within the Hematopathology Service.

    Required Qualifications:

    1. High School diploma or GED required.

    2. 1-3 years related work experience required in Administrative, Healthcare or Science based.

    3. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

    5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

    6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

    7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

    8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

    Physical Nature of the Job:
