NREL's Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) works on all aspects of grid integration of advanced energy technologies. Within PSEC, the Integrated Devices and Systems group focuses on fast timescale challenges related to integration of high levels of inverter-based resources (IBRs), using techniques including power hardware-in-the-loop experimentation, power electronics, phasor-domain dynamic modeling, electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling, grid integration standards, advanced protection, and advanced controls including grid-forming inverter controls, etc. We often lead research in NREL's power labs including the Energy Systems Integration Facility and the Flatirons Campus. We work closely with industry partners and leading academic researchers to identify solutions for the rapidly evolving power system.

We seek an intern to work with us on projects related to EMT modeling of power systems with high levels of IBRs. The intern will work with NREL researchers on some combination of the following tasks:

• Design, develop and use EMT models to investigate grid stability in high-IBR scenarios, including network models and device dynamic models
• Use commercial software such as PSCAD and/or NREL's open-source software, ParaEMT.
• Develop advanced applications of ParaEMT including hybrid simulations, advanced parallelization methods, and advanced IBR models.
• Contribute to, and potentially lead, publications related to EMT modeling of high-IBR power systems.

The intern will have the opportunity to use advanced computing resources such as NREL's high-performance computer and/or or advanced multi-core desktop workstations.

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor's degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master's degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate: Earned a master's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master's degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

• Relevant Ph.D. or Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or related fields. Or, relevant master's degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
• Advanced expertise in various power systems modeling.
• Proficiency in power system modeling, simulation, and analysis (see preferred qualifications below).
• Familiar with EMT simulation algorithms, such as nodal formulation and interface between generator and network.
• Experience with computer programming or software development, and Python is required.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

• Strong expertise in power systems modeling, simulation and analysis of large-scale power grids, including experience in power flow, transient stability, and electromagnetic transients (EMT) studies.
• Familiar with EMT simulation algorithms, such as nodal formulation and interface between generator and network.
• Solid background in power systems operation and analysis, such as power flow, dynamics and control, stability, etc.
• Familiarity with modeling synchronous generators, loads, and GFL/GFM IBRs.
• Solid experience with Python programing.
• Experience with two or more power system simulation tools (e.g., PSS/E, Powerworld, PSLF, PSCAD, RSCAD/RTDS, MATLAB/Simulink, PSAT and others)
• Software development experience is a plus. Experience with software development in Python or other programming languages.
• Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
