  • This position reports directly to the Language Services Supervisor in the Support Services Department. The primary obligation of the Foreign Language Interpreter is to overcome language barriers so that limited English proficient patients will have meaningful access to medical care and suffer no advantage or disadvantage as compared to English-speaking patients and other parties during Medical Center appointments or procedures. Ensure effective and clear communication between non-English speaking patients their families and Medical Center staff.

    • Conducts medical and general interpreting for limited English staff, patients and their families; to include end of life, terminal, trauma, transplant, cancer, mental health, and various other complex procedures as required.

    • Performs educational instruction as it pertains to research, genetic, or various other medical processes as required or assigned.

    • Performs a variety of administrative tasks, training, and education within the Health System; to include handling of interpreting services devices required for assisting patience in Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), Hard of Hearing devices as needed to perform departmental medical translation services.

    • Accurately complete daily activity logs, calendars, regular reports, or other documentation as required

    • Participates in research and other projects designed to increase the scope, quality and depth of services provided by the program.

    • Must be familiar with the nuances of language, legal compliance, and cultural differences in the countries where both the source and target languages are spoken; while demonstrating continued work toward enhancing such knowledge.

    • Must be able to multitask and prioritize schedule and task based on operational needs; with flexible on demand scheduling adjustments based on medical and/or health system priorities.

    Include, but are not limited to:

    • Collaborate and cooperate with other members of the team and share information with contract interpreters as needed.

    • Identifies, develops and maintains working relationships with the university and community agencies for support as appropriate to work assignment.

    • Assists with patient wayfinding, periodic or frequent team meetings, and maintains initial and annual medical center training as required by Health System.

    • Represents the department and serves on department and university committees, as appropriate.

    • Assists the Language Department Supervisor to meet educational goals and objectives of the unit.

    • Works in partnership with volunteer interpreters, to provide quality resourcing as needed.

    • Supports other program locations, and duties as needed.

    Position Compensation Range: -

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education: High School or equivalent required. Bridging the Gap Interpreting Course or 40-hour equivalent course required.

    Experience: One year of medical interpreting experience required. Two or more years of medical interpreting experience preferred.

    Ability to perform consecutive interpreting (written and sight) required. Simultaneous interpretation preferred.

    Licensure: Required within 1 year of employment from one of the following certifying organizations.

    NBCMI: National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters

    CCHI: Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Job requires frequently traveling (distance: minimum 1 mile/daily). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.

    Ability to lift up to 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree
