  • What You Will Do

    This internship provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's engineering education. The fire protection office is seeking students to support a variety of projects around Los Alamos National Laboratory including:

    • Support review of fire protection system designs and calculations, including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm, and special hazard systems.

    • Analyze life safety requirements for buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations, and components of the means of egress.

    • Perform on-site fire protection system evaluations and participate in final system testing.

    • Inspect buildings for hazard assessment and compliance.

    • Perform building and fire code analyses and interpretations. Prepare fire hazards analysis and engineering evaluation documents.

    • Interface with facility project personnel and coordinate project designs with other engineering disciplines.

    • Perform analyses of existing fire protection systems to determine capabilities, shortcomings, and solutions to rectify deficiencies.

    Minimum Job Requirements

    • Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in any engineering discipline. Engineering degree in greatest demand include Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, and Fire Protection Engineering.

    • Enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester (or equivalent of full-time enrollment).

    • Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale. Note: Students must provide the program coordinator with current, official transcripts annually to remain eligible. See the Annual Transcript & Salary Review Process section for additional information.

    • Pass a new employment drug test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

    • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.

    • Basic knowledge along with any class project experience with analysis or testing in one or more of the following STEM areas: Biology, Chemistry, Coding, Manufacturing, Physics, Nuclear, Materials, Math, Data acquisition and analysis.

    • Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written communications.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Successful experience working in a team environment.

    • Previous experience in building design, construction, facilities, fire protection, or the fire service.

    • Enrolled in a fire protection engineering or engineering technology graduate degree program.

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Education/Experience: Position requires a to be enrolled in an undergraduate program in STEM from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) .     No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
