    The Role

    This position is in support of the U.S. Navy's GERALD R. FORD Class Aircraft Carrier. This position is offered in department E44 (Networks, Communications, and Automation), which is responsible for vital shipboard Interior Communications, Damage Control, Voice, Video, Navigation, Machinery Control and Monitoring Systems, Networks and Cybersecurity. This position supports aircraft carrier new construction, testing, and delivery; in-service maintenance; and fleet operations. You will have the opportunity to contribute throughout the entire software development lifecycle from requirements to verification and validation. As a member of the software group you will apply your programming/coding skills, architectural knowledge, and leadership toward the development, deployment, and maintenance of software associated with customized operating systems, operator control stations, and hardware and control system interfaces. Areas of responsibility encompass designs, development, documents, tests and debugging application software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions.

    Conducts multidisciplinary research and collaborates with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software. Determine computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; prepares operating instructions; designs and develops compilers and assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems. Ensures software standards are met. Strong technical writing skills, the ability to proactively identify and resolve technical design issues, and the interpersonal skills necessary to collaborate with Navy civilian and uniformed customers, our supply partners, shipyard trades, engineers, project managers, and business professionals.

    Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.

    Must Have

    Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;

    Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;

    Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

    Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
