  • Summary:

    The Reality Labs Research Hardware Team is looking for an Embedded Software Engineering Manager to join our team, whose mission is to bring cutting-edge virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences to life. We are specifically looking for a candidate with a broad background, including deep embedded-system knowledge, a passion for working on new hardware, and strong leadership skills. You are comfortable working with a wide variety of hardware devices and working with a team that rapidly delivers reliable, high-performance firmware. To make this possible, we need a leader to foster a well-rounded team that nurtures kinship, enables good communication, and is sympathetic to the challenges in these diverse ~~~ this role, you will lead and cooperate with engineers and researchers to concept, design, and build the next generation of research hardware systems that enable social VR and AR. You will collaborate and contribute at a deeply technical level and guide team members, including vendors and manufacturing partners. You will be responsible for intaking requirements from researchers and engineers, defining optimized workflows, identifying risks and associated mitigation plans, and communicating clearly to program stakeholders. You will help define firmware design that includes mobile and tethered solutions, real-time sensor data acquisition, including IMUs and cameras, wireless communications, embedded MCUs, custom and OTS System On Chip (SoC), and ~~~ are looking for someone comfortable with ambiguity, exhibits a sense of ownership, and enjoys an open and considerate environment.     Required Skills:

    Embedded Software Engineering Manager Responsibilities

    1. Lead firmware engineering activities and provide leadership and guidance to your team members.

    2. Collaborate in a team environment across multiple product focused, research, and engineering disciplines, making the architectural tradeoffs required to rapidly deliver firmware solutions.

    3. Understand, develop, and implement firmware on micro-controllers, and SoCs, leverage peripherals, manage power consumption, support boot loaders, and schedule real-time tasks (RTOS).

    4. Build software development processes that allow for rapid development and experimentation while maintaining a high quality product.

    5. Manage project meetings, schedules, milestones and delivery, including managing vendors and manufacturing partners to achieve teams goals.

    6. Actively influence the strategy and shaping of design roadmap for research efforts involving FW-based solutions. Set technical vision for the team together with input and in collaboration with other engineering leads.

    7. Support and provide oversight for a small SWQA team and automation lab. Coordinate with SWQA lead on strategy for meeting quality assurance goals and milestones for the team.

    8. Maintain relationship with Joint-Development Manufacturer, including implementing strategies to share code/IP, help resolve technical questions, and help coordinate team's response to JDM's HW-test and build efforts.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    1. BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience.

    2. 3+ years of management experience and 10+ years of experience on firmware development.

    3. Proven track record in building or developing a team of engineers.

    4. Experience with embedded processors architecture and boot mechanism, interrupt priorities, and configuring peripherals such as SPI, MIPI CSI/DSI, I2C/I3C, UART, GPIO, PWM, I2S/TDM, USB, etc.

    5. Experience developing firmware for systems using sensors, such as IMU, Accelerometers, Cameras, etc.

    6. Experience with software design and programming in C/C++ for development, debugging, testing and performance analysis.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Experience with RTOSs, preferably direct experience with Zephyr or similarly complex RTOSs.

    2. Hardware debugging, clock-level issues, bridges, delays, interrupts, clock gating, polling, power consumption, etc.

    3. Experience developing firmware which leverages or interfaces with RF technologies such as WIFI, BT, ZigBee, Wireless HART, etc.

    4. Experience with interfacing MCUs or soft-core with FPGA-based designs, at register level or via serial interfaces.

    5. Experience designing experiments to diagnose embedded hardware and firmware problems.

    6. Experience leading cross functional teams to execute product development on schedule.

    7. Experience maximizing performance of resource constrained systems.

    Public Compensation:

    $213,000/year to $293,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
