POSITION: ELL Assistant & Program Assistant
LOCATION: Pleasant Valley Elementary School
HOURS: 6 Hours Per Day (8:00am - 2:30pm) (5 hrs - ELL Assistant, 1 hr - Program Assistant)
CALENDAR: 193 Days Per Year; August - June (will be prorated based on start date)
SALARY: $20.12 - $27.85 Per Hour (Range D)

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT(S): The job of Educational Assistant -ELL is to assist a certificated teacher in the planning and implementation of instructional programs for students identified as in English Language Learners program(s). Employees in this job group perform para-professional duties in settings where special instructional programs and teaching techniques are used to assist students with specific language needs relative to the use of the English language and who have been identified as English Language Learners (ELL). This can be accomplished through one-on-one and small group support and tutoring; and can include assistance in the testing of students and performing a variety of clerical duties in support of these programs. Some positions may require aptitude and skill in working with the particular disability or learning needs of the students. Some positions may be associated with federal NCLB paraprofessional requirements. Methods of performing tasks are usually left to the judgment of the employee with a supervisor giving regular instructions, advice, or direction; work is reviewed periodically while in progress and upon completion. The position of Program Assistant monitors student behavior during playground, cafeteria, detention-time out, or street crossing activities; and performs a variety of general clerical duties in support of instructional activities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:- Assist in the planning and implementing of learning experiences of students enrolled in program.
- Confer with teacher(s) to provide feedback on student performance in tutorial and testing activities.
- Support students in small group and one-on-one settings.
- Revise pre-planned teaching strategy during instructional activity as necessary to achieve student goals and objectives.
- Conduct student testing using prescribed test batteries upon receiving necessary training; record or enter test scores; and inform teacher of any unusual academic or disciplinary problems.
- Help students develop positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
- Promote self-confidence of the students by offering positive reinforcement and encouragement.
- Provide education regarding appropriate interpersonal actions; respond to discipline problems; act as a role model.
- Monitor student activity, safety, behavior.
- Enforce District policies and rules.
- Resolve minor or routine behavioral problems and discipline students for minor rule infractions.
- Report more serious behavioral problems to appropriate teacher or Principal.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:- Attend in-service and workshop training related to area of assignment and apply training to instructional responsibilities.
- Perform a variety of general clerical duties, including writing attendance reports, grading papers and maintaining accurate files.
- Assist, as requested, in communication between students, teachers and parents, including the provision of interpretive services when requested and if qualified.
- Perform basic first aid, makes initial assessment of medical emergencies, and summons appropriate medical response.
- Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS:- Experience Required: Prior job related experience in working with students identified as ELL.
- Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
General skills in demonstrative ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
General knowledge in all Educational Assistant positions include modern office methods, practices, procedures, and equipment, including computer hardware and software, a required by specific assignment. The principles, practices and techniques of instruction related to area of assignment. English usage, translation skills associated with one or more foreign languages.
General abilities in all Educational Assistant positions include working effectively in an environment which can be both physically and emotionally fatiguing. Deal in an empathetic manner with students from other cultures. Learn basic first aid and safety requirements. Work in a team setting. Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance. Perform physical job tasks. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Skill in working with other adults and with students with a variety of skill levels, monitoring student activities and behavior and constructively intervening to stop unsafe or unruly behavior. Monitor student educational progress and advise teacher(s) of student progress or perceived deficiencies. Patiently and effectively work with students, including students with behavioral problems and mild learning disabilities. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of basic child care techniques; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and basic bookkeeping, as required of specific assignment, and modern office methods, practices, procedures, office equipment, as required of specific assignment. Learn basic first aid and safety requirements.
Ability to learn and apply techniques and methods of student supervision and classroom management, learn growth and development principles of students. Work in a team situation. Apply prescribed instructional program in small and large group settings and in one-on-one tutoring setting. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. to learn and apply basic principles and practices of instructional program within area of assignment. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others. Ability to develop rapport with students and other employees. Ability to make decisions independently.
Ability to speak a second language preferred.
- Education Required: Must meet one of the following options:
- Completed two years of college
- Hold a two-year degree
- Hold a state or local "No Child Left Behind" certification
- Licenses, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance (applicant agrees to assume cost upon offer of employment). Possession of, or ability to obtain a first aid and CPR card.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel.
