  • The Opportunity:

    WSP is seeking a motivated and detailed-oriented co-op student with a focus on Electrical Engineering Technology and a strong interest in engineering automation. The successful candidate will join our team to assist in developing, modifying, and optimizing engineering workflows. This position offers hands-on experience with AutoCAD-based tools, electrical schematics, and automation scripting, aligning with our commitment to increase efficiency and quality in design deliverables.

    The 4, 8 or 12 month co-op position will be based in Calgary and will be reporting to the Digital Tools Manager, Rail & Transit - Thornhill..

    What you can expect to do here:

    AutoCAD Electrical Drafting & Design:

    • Assist in creating and updating electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and system documentation using AutoCAD Electrical.

    • Ensure all drawings adhere to established design standards, industry codes, and project requirements.

    Tool and Workflow Automation

    • Support the development and refinement of custom add-ins and plug-ins using VB.NET and ObjectARX for AutoCAD.

    • Collaborate with the senior developers to streamline repetitive engineering tasks, reduce manual drafting errors, and improve data consistency.

    Data Integration & Management:

    • Help integrate electrical component libraries, maintain databases, and ensure accurate part and vendor information.

    • Contribute to standardizing design elements to enhance scalability and repeatability.

    Quality Assurance & Documentation:

    • Conduct regular drawing checks, troubleshoot design issues, and identify improvement opportunities in existing workflows.

    • Assist in maintaining proper documentation for code repositories, design guidelines, and internal process manuals.

    Team Collaboration & Support:

    • Work closely with engineers, designers, and software developers to gather requirements, implement feedback, and meet project deadlines.

    • Participate in team meetings, providing input on both technical and process-related improvements.

    What you'll bring to WSP:

    • Enrolled in a recognized Electrical Engineering Technology program or related field (preferably 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year students);

    • Excellent academic record;

    • Proficiency in AutoCAD (preferably AutoCAD Electrical) for schematics and layouts;

    • Basic knowledge of electrical systems, wiring, and circuit diagrams;

    • Familiarity with programming concepts - experience with VB.NET or similar languages and an interest in learning ObjectARX is a strong asset;

    • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality and accuracy;

    • Excellent problem-solving abilities and the willingness to learn from feedback;

    • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team;

    • Prior co-op or internship experience in an engineering environment;

    • Knowledge of engineering standards, codes, and best practices.

    • Excellent technical, analytical writing, and presentation skills;
