What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Operator 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities outlined below will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Utilities and Infrastructure is responsible for maintaining and operating all of the Laboratory's traffic and utility systems including electric, gas, sewer, steam, and water. In addition, UI maintains and manages all of the open space on site, including parking and transportation infrastructure. UI is leading the effort to achieve net-zero emissions at the Laboratory and houses the Institutional Sustainability Program. Additionally, UI oversees and manages the Laboratory's parking and transportation services.
Operator 3 ($63,200 - $99,000)
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Electric Utility Reliability Coordinator to join our Utilities and Infrastructure Division, specifically within the Electric, Steam, and Turbine Operations group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). In this role, you will be a key contributor to the operation and maintenance of LANL's electric transmission and distribution systems, ensuring they support the Laboratory's critical mission. You will report directly to the UI Electric, Steam, and Turbine Operations Manager and will play an integral role in developing and executing switching orders, maintaining accurate system configurations, and ensuring system reliability. This position is primarily located inside the dispatch room, which is an isolated area requiring entry access. The successful candidate must be flexible and adapt to operational conditions on short notice, which may directly impact the daily work load.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate and maintain the LANL electric transmission and distribution systems in alignment with reliability standards and operational limits.
Collaborate closely with Operations Specialists, System Engineers, Maintenance, and Safety personnel to support efficient electric system operations.
Develop, communicate, and execute switching orders, working in tandem with field personnel to ensure precise implementation.
Monitor and maintain system configurations, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
Troubleshoot operational issues, implementing corrective actions as necessary to maintain system integrity.
Contribute to the development and refinement of operational procedures to enhance system performance.
Operator 4 ($69,500-$110,300)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level, the selected candidate will independently conceptualize and communicate major elements of equipment and maintenance and/or upgrade activities, prepare switching procedures, train less-experienced operators and operator trainees, and may act as a lead to review work activities of other employees.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Proficient knowledge or experience in electric transmission or distribution systems or similar system operations.
Ability to analyze/troubleshoot operational system problems and implement corrective actions.
Ability to understand supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) control and operations.
Demonstrated experience in developing procedures.
Experience in maintaining operating system configuration and updating.
Ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
Additional Job Requirements for Operator 4:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Extensive knowledge and experience in a wide variety of operations and maintenance activities including, but not limited to, mechanical and electrical systems.
Proven experience independently conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting equipment maintenance and operations.
Experience training and mentoring less-experienced employees.
Education/Experience at Operator 3 level: Position requires a high school diploma and 5 years of related experience or a relevant Associates Degree and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at Operator 4 level: Position requires a high school diploma and 7 years of related experience or a relevant Associates Degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) control and operations.
Understanding of NERC reliability standards.
Experience operating and maintaining electrical systems.
Experience working with Union Craft.
Ability to obtain Q Clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
