  • What You Will Do

    This position will be filled at either the Development and Fabrication Tec 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

    The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division is seeking an experienced Development and Fabrication Tec to join our collaborative and dynamic team! As a leader in space research for over sixty years, ISR Division designs, builds, delivers, and exploits innovative ground- and space-based measurement systems. Our projects range from cutting edge scientific explorations expanding our knowledge of the universe, to ensuring national and global security. ISR is a multidisciplinary organization working across government and commercial sectors to lead experiments for the U.S. Space Force, NASA, the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, and other notable agencies. Efforts include direct involvement in imperative missions such as the Curiosity & Perseverance Mars rovers, Van Allen Probes, IBEX, as well as the upcoming IMAP, NACHOS, and BeamPIE projects.

    The Space Instrument Realization Group (ISR-5) provides the engineering and technical expertise to develop, build and deploy these advanced measurement systems into space. ISR-5 is comprised of mechanical, electrical, systems, and quality engineers - mechanical and electronics technicians and technologists - and technical project managers. All members engage within interdisciplinary, high-performance project teams that span from conceptual development to system deployment and mission execution. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, self-motivated, and proficient multi-tasker with a strong desire and capacity to learn and work across disciplines. As a member of the Quality Assurance team, the selected candidate will inspect flight hardware and assist in the management of our physical inventory. This role will directly support the Quality Control aspect of ISR's Quality Management System and help maintain our electrical stock components. This will directly impact PCB inspection, space systems material kitting/BOMs, and provide valuable contributions for increased robustness of ISR's physical inventory management.

    Quality Control

    • Perform certification of assembly bench Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) mats, ionizers, desiccator storage and monitoring equipment, and continuous ESD monitors.

    • Handle ESD hardware with engineering controls in accordance with industry practice.

    • Perform Bill of Material (BOM) inspection, verify component polarity with drawing, verify active components part number and location.

    • Inspect boards for damage including, layer delamination, gouging to solder surfaces or mask, evaluate cuts to PCB traces and PCB flatness.

    • Utilize microscope and cameras to document assembly workmanship and hardware anomalies.

    • Basic mechanical tool and assembly skills to configure hardware for inspection.

    Controlled Inventory

    • Handle and store ESD-sensitive hardware using engineering controls in accordance with industry best practices.

    • Maintain controlled inventory organizational structure and reallocate project space on as-needed basis.

    • Kit flight hardware assemblies and document PCB as-built record.

    • Capture discrepancies between BOM and kitted hardware.

    • Coordinate kit delivery with cognizant engineer(s) and project engineers.

    • Generate traceability reports for chain of custody to provide to project engineers and customers.

    • Remove and retrieve parts from inventory. Receive and re-package parts into inventory.

    Team Collaboration

    • Engage with project personnel to provide status updates, generate reports, communicate and document build and anomalies.

    • Navigate unexpected workflow and priority shifts with projects.

    • Participate in design review activities with project teams.

    Organizational Skills

    • Attention to detail is essential.

    • Priority management to facilitate production and maintain parallel production builds.

    • Must possess time management skills to accurately budget effort and product delivery to control cost and meet project deadlines.

    • Maintain clean and organized lab/work space during operation and between jobs.

    • Archive stock heritage and certifications records.

    Development and Fabrication Tec 2 ($52,400 - $80,600) duties include, though are not limited to the following:

    • Working knowledge of flight hardware inspection and associated industry standards including IPC 600s standards for rigid, flexible, and rigid-flexible PCBs.

    • Experience using microscopes to perform work in lab setting.

    • Experience handling Export Control Information.

    • Experience reading and interpreting an PCB and cable harness schematics.

    • Experience handling ESD hardware in accordance with industry practices including use of continous wrist strap monitors, ionizers, ESD jacket, ESD packaging materials, desiccators.

    • Experience with inventory management practices and software.

    • Uses standard CAD systems to display and generate drawings of simple systems and subsystem components based on information received from others.

    • Performs basic set up, alignments, maintenance, operations, and/or calibration of conventional tools and/or equipment on most materials.

    • Uses a variety of tools and precision measuring instruments.

    • Maintains documentation; documents results and generates reports.

    • Manages waste; identifies, labels and disposes of waste per required procedures; handles and stores hazardous materials in accordance with LANL and regulatory requirements.

    • Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance.

    • Ensures all work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.

    • Fosters a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

    Development and Fabrication Tec 3 ($57,800 - $89,500) duties include those listed above, and in addition:

    • Current or former practitioner in either the Quality Control or controlled inventory vocations.

    • Certified QA inspector of PCB assemblies and cable harnesses. Particular desire for certification per IPC-J-STD-001 and IPC-J-STD-001 Space Addendum, IPC 600s class.

    • Experience with advanced hardware analysis equipment including Keyence systems, X-ray imaging, and CT imaging.

    • Autonomous and self-motivated with ability to work for project specific tasks with little oversight from project or production team personnel.

    • Experience with controlled inventory management systems and practices, including experience developing internal standards and MRP and/or ERP systems.

    • Develop and mature organizational standards, practices, and capabilities.

    Technical Experience

    Comfortability in lab environments and working with technical equipment; critical item handling, operating on ESD benches, utilizing hand tools; wearing laboratory gowning including coats, smocks, gloves, hairnets, and beard masks.

    Strong interpersonal and written skills, demonstrated by relationships built, briefings prepared, and presentations given; ability and persistence to effectively navigate institutional systems and processes to meet goals in a timely manner.

    Safety and Security

    Safety and security are the highest priorities for executing work at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Candidate must have demonstrated record of commitment to safety, security, environmental stewardship, and quality. This position requires the ability to lead the shipment of hazardous materials between sensitive areas, and the ability to understand and meet technical requirements with the same hardware in different facilities is critical. The ability to obtain a Q clearance is required.

    In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualifications at the higher level requires:

    Technical Experience

    Prior experience with controlled inventory management systems and associated best practices. Experience with advanced hardware analysis equipment including Keyence systems, X-ray imaging, and CT imaging.

    Work Ethic

    Proven experience in working autonomously and self-motivated with ability to work for project specific tasks with little oversight from project or production team personnel.

    Education/Experience at Lower Level : Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Education/Experience at Higher Level: Position requires an Associates' Degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience applying IPC standards in the design, assembly, or inspection of PCB assemblies.

    • Experience handling electronic and/or flight-grade hardware.

    • Experience in laboratory and clean area environments.

    • Experience with flight-build documentation including BOMs and travelers.

    Work Environment:

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).     New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
