    Job Details

    JOB SUMMARY: Leads the planning and implementation of Cordova's community garden. Responsible for gardening and organizing community involvement in the garden and providing guidance and leadership for garden. Responsible for all general maintenance tasks related to the garden including installing garden beds, gathering local resources for building soil, composting, servicing garden machinery, conducting regular garden maintenance and advising management of cost-effective methods. The ideal candidate should be friendly, professional and knowledgeable about gardening or willing to learn more. Must live in Cordova.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Organize community participants in shared garden space. Lead garden activities and provide guidance to garden assistant.
    2. Advise and communicate with garden participants.
    3. Build, maintain and grow the garden to ensure it meets specific requirements and expectations.
    4. Perform basic maintenance such as watering, weeding, composting, weed control, and help support other participants in maintenance tasks.
    5. Plant and nurture new plants.
    6. Work with hand tools and basic light machinery.
    7. Service all garden equipment and machinery.
    8. Assist in planning events in the garden, including activities for kids.
    9. Maintain a clean garden by clearing rubbish and litter from the garden and grounds.
    10. Provide guidance to gardeners on matters related to the garden.
    11. Advise supervisors on the costs of plants and garden necessities with detailed written quotations and reports.
    12. Ensure a safe environment for staff and clients by adhering to safety and health regulations.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    1. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
    2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly to grasp, type, see, talk, hear, and lift and carry 35 pounds of weight by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner. This position will also be performing physical activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending, and handling materials.
    3. Must be in good general health and free from serious physical, mental health and/or substance abuse problems.
    POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

    This is a part-time Community Gardener position. Weekly hours will vary between 5- 40 hours a week with an average of 15 hours a week from May until September. Days and hours of work will occur during normal business hours - Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or hours vary with location. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

    EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS AND REQUIRED EDUCATION:
    1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
    2. Must live in Cordova.
    3. Ability to handle powered hand tools.
    4. Willingness to learn more about garden management, growing plants and gardening techniques.
    5. Friendly personality with excellent interpersonal skills.
    6. Solid understanding of health and safety rules and legislation.
    PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    • Gardening or farming experience.
