    What's a typical day as a Coating Operator in Training? You'll be:

    Summary

    • The Coating Operator in Training is required to learn all Industrial Machine functions such as setups, material loading/off-loading and cleaning.

    • Responsibilities include operating coating equipment to achieve specific functionalities and properties as detailed in work order instructions.

    • Once capable of operating the machine independently, they are eligible for promotion to Coating Operator.

    This position is one that may require independent work as well as working directly with others on the same machine.

    It requires a high attention to detail as well as the ability to follow written and verbal instructions in a fast-paced environment.

    Procedures

    • Receives daily assignments at the start of each shift to include machinery to be operated, work orders and process folders with job specifications.

    • Ensures that machines have been cleaned and temperatures, airflows, speed and threading are set to specifications prior to beginning a new work order.

    • Loads raw materials onto machine using a hand crank, hydraulic lift or crane

    • Adds mixes to machine either by pumping from a drum or adding by hand to ensure proper consistency in accordance with work order.

    • Strikes off routine products on coaters to verify quality.

    • Enters information into Queen Anne Drive (QAD) system upon receipt of material and before returning to warehouse for proper inventory management.

    • Reviews customer specifications and reviews requirements with supervisor if information is not included in the process folder.

    • Adjusts machine for speed and tension using either hand controls or touch screen.

    • Performs basic quality testing to include visual inspection of defects and scratches.

    • Understands and adheres to all company safety specifications related to the use of coating machine.

    Education/Experience and Training Time

    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent experience.

    • This position requires 12 to 18 months' work experience depending on the type of coating machine to become proficient in all phases of the job to work independently.

    Knowledge and Skills Requirement

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required of the Coating Operator in Training.

    Materials & Products

    • Work with 30- and 55-gallon drums of mixes that may contain silicones, non-silicones, adhesives and other chemicals in a solvent solution.

    • Handle rolls that range from narrow (<1") to wide (>80") film substrates made from multiple types of materials

    • Provide products for the medical, aerospace, electronics and other industrial applications

    Equipment

    • Uses a variety of heavy machinery, pumps and lifting equipment daily.

    • Basic hand tools such as a hammer, screwdriver or socket set to build or breakdown machinery parts.

    • Lift tables, roll carts and occasional use of small cranes

    • Personal protective equipment is provided but must be maintained by operator. Required to use all PPE as designated

    Complexity

    • Accurately identifies the typical mixes and raw materials and supplies to verify against the work orders and process folders.

    • Requires knowledge of the various coating machines and basic troubleshooting procedures.

    • Must be able to follow instructions carefully and high attention to detail

    Latitude of Judgment

    • The Coating Operator in Training follows clearly defined work orders to determine coating requirements as prioritized by a supervisor, however, independent judgment is often required to make adjustments to machinery.

    • Utilizes skills in adjusting machinery to assure proper coating and avoiding product damage.

    Supervisory responsibility

    • This job does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

    Physical Demands/Efforts

    • Coating Operator in Training must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (i.e. shaft, idler, mixes) without assistance and up to 100 lb. plastic film rolls with assistance or second person.

    • Must be able to operate handling equipment such as hydraulic/pneumatic lifts for material that is over 100 lbs.

    • Required to push roll carts that can carry up to 2,500lbs on them short distances

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.

    • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell.

    Mental & Visual Demands

    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, job folders and memos required.

    • Performs basic math calculations, by hand and by computer, to include conversions, weight measurements, volume and distance.

    Work Environment

    • While performing the duties of this job within the manufacturing environment, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts.

    • The employee works in a manufacturing setting and is occasionally exposed to heat, fumes, or airborne dust.

    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud when blower is in use.

    Various PPE devices & equipment such as gloves, safety shoes, dust masks, hearing protection, and glasses may be required.
