    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Position Title: Certified Teacher - Elementary School - English as a Second Language

    Location: Benjamin Elementary School, Pepper Ridge Elementary, & Fox Creek Elementary.

    Department: Building Personnel

    Reports to: Principal/Director of Multilingual Services

    FLSA Class: Exempt

    FTE: 1.0

    SUMMARY

    This position provides content and language instruction to students. This position performs a wide variety of tasks with curriculum planning, supervision, presenting and reinforcing learning concepts, and teaching children in a multi-age classroom setting.

    DUTIES
    1. Teaches culturally responsive, rigorous, and language scaffolded curriculum.
    2. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
    3. Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
    4. Challenges deficit thinking as an advocate for multilingual learners through actions and in conversations.
    5. Designs coherent instruction, employing a variety of instructional techniques and technology to meet the instructional and linguistic needs of individual students.
    6. Seeks out opportunities to include culturally relevant strategies and to identify unique funds of knowledge of immigrant students and their families.
    7. Creates a welcoming and supportive classroom environment in both the self-contained and co-taught setting.
    8. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
    9. Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policies.
    10. Shows care and concern for the physical and mental well-being of pupils by conducting restorative circles and utilizing other social and emotional learning practices.
    11. Accepts the responsibility for the conduct and behavior of pupils whenever the students are under the school's jurisdiction.
    12. Cooperates and works in conjunction with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
    13. Attends staff meetings, accepts committee appointments and the responsibility for working with other staff members on projects concerned with the improvement of the total school program.
    14. Assists in the selection of culturally and linguistically appropriate books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
    15. Insures that instructional materials are utilized effectively for learning purposes.
    16. Accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned.
    17. Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all students including utilizing standards based grading practices.
    18. Cooperates with agencies toward the development of friendly and intelligent school-community relations.
    19. Provides for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
    20. Effective use of formative and summative assessment strategies to evaluate strengths and areas of improvement for classes, small groups, and individuals keeping accurate and complete records.
    21. Participates in data days, the MTSS team, and evaluation team to advocate for the unique learning experiences and needs of multilingual learners.
    22. Perform all other duties reasonably related to position as may be assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Multilingual Services.
    QUALIFICATIONS
    1. Must possess an Illinois Professional Educator License properly endorsed.
    2. Must be familiar with the use of computers and how to engage students through technology utilizing Google.
    3. Establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with those contacted in the course of work (students, parents, and staff).
    4. Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions in English as well as Spanish and/or French.
    5. Ability to communicate to students, parents and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner.
    COMPENSATION:

    Per the negotiated contract between McLean County Unit 5 and the United Five Education Association, for the 2024-2025 school year the starting salary range for candidates with a Bachelor's Degree is $41,820- $56,066 and is based on Education and Certified Teaching experience. For candidates with a Master's Degree, the range is $46,820-$67,214 and is based on Education and Certified Teaching experience.
