Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), in collaboration with a licensed Occupational Therapist, promotes the physical, social, behavioral, emotional, and skill development of adults to their highest potential. The COTA is responsible for implementing the identified programs and services associated with sensory-motor, cognitive, and daily living skills, as well as improving the residents’ range of motion, muscle strength and tone, coordination, and level of neurodevelopment.

COTA Job Duties:

• Provide treatment, guidance, and instruction to residents in individual and group settings, following individual plans of care developed and evaluated by the Registered Occupational Therapist.
• Assist residents in developing various communication skills to enhance their ability to make their wants and needs known.
• Collect data and write progress notes as specified within each resident’s program plan.
• Maintain occupational therapy equipment in good repair and make adjustments as necessary or order supplies to maintain adequate inventory.
• Promote motivation in treatment through creativity and treat residents with sensitivity and confidentiality.
• Assist therapist with evaluation and record keeping procedures as directed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Degree in Occupational Therapy from approved college or university program.
• Associate’s degree in Occupational Therapy Assisting and certified by the National Occupational Therapist Association.
• 21 years of age or older.
• Current OTA License with the State of Massachusetts

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
• Professional and effective communication skills.
• Enhanced understanding of medical/clinical records, consents, and confidentiality.
• Proficiency in the use of personal computers and software applications.

The Wrentham Developmental Center is a historic state-run medical facility for the treatment of psychiatric and developmental disorders. Hope has partnered with Wrentham Developmental Center to provide essential habilitative services to the individuals residing at the facility.
