  • The Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia invites applications for a position at the Assistant Professor rank in the fields of African American and African Studies, with a start date of Fall 2025. Scholars who can be appointed as an early-career Assistant Professor, and who completed their graduate studies in the United States or in other countries, are encouraged to apply. We welcome candidates who specialize in Afro-Latin American Studies and Islamic Studies and approach themes like transncontinentalism, transnationalism, racialization, colonialism and post-colonialism, memory, identities, community, politics, and aesthetics through disciplinary or interdisciplinary modes from across fields in the humanities and social sciences. Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated record and potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service.

    Eligible applicants must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a closely related field at the time of appointment, and will be assessed based on their demonstrated record and potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service. Screening of applications will begin on December January 17, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

    The successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Courses to teach include but are not limited to: Introduction to Afro-Latin America; Islam and the Black Experience; Caribbean Perspectives; Race & Citizenship in the Americas; Afro-Latin American Intellectual Traditions. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program, and contribute to and develop initiatives in areas of research that complement and expand departmental strengths in African and African Diasporic studies. They will be able to take advantage of collaborative relationships with other departments, units, and initiatives, like American Studies, Latin American Studies, the Institute for the Humanities and Global Cultures, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Successful candidates will also contribute to the department's mentoring of graduate students in interdisciplinary programs and certificates in areas such as Africana Studies, Digital Humanities, Environmental Humanities, Environmental Justice, Indigenous Studies, and Race and Inequality in Higher Education.
