The purpose of this position is to provide supervision and instruction of an Institution Community Work Crew (ICWC). This includes training of ICWC trainees in job skills and technical related subjects in residential home construction. Training will take place on the job site as well as off site for specialized areas including OSHA related topics. Training is on a group basis, but may take place on a one to one basis through performance reviews of trainees.
The carpenter will be responsible for the coordination, planning and organizing of projects, maintaining and accounting for equipment and construction materials, interaction with local and state units of government, non-profit agencies, sub-contractors and reporting.
This is a year round program that requires the carpenter to produce new houses for a non-profit Agency or to complete various repair/remodeling projects. The volume and value of completed projects must be sufficient enough to allow for the contracting agency to support the ongoing costs for crew operations. This is a working position which requires the ICWC carpenter to be able to perform and instruct trainees to perform all tasks. This position may require both weekend and evening work.
Minimum Qualifications
To be qualified for and considered for this position, applicants must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below. Ensure that your resume contains descriptions of your work experiences sufficient for comparison against the requirements stated below and indicate the beginning and ending month and year for each job held .
Completion of an approved apprenticeship in carpentry (application/resume must include the date the apprenticeship was completed) AND four (4) years of carpentry experience.
Note: Completion of a vocational/technical program in carpentry may substitute for six (6) months of experience.
Experience as a supervisor, lead, or foreman.
Applicants meeting the experience requirements listed above will be further assessed on the following:
Ability to read and interpret construction, remodeling and repair project plans, blueprints, and specifications sufficient to complete new construction, remodeling, and other carpentry projects.
Ability to build, repair, and install cabinets, Formica, floors, windows and door frames, ceilings, interior trim, steel stud framing, furniture, fixtures, etc. sufficient to complete skilled finish and rough carpentry projects in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings and wood structures.
Ability to operate hand and power carpentry tools and equipment sufficient to build, remodel and repair buildings, wood structures, furniture, etc. and to ensure their safe and efficient operation to prevent injury, by inspecting the equipment daily and replacing worn parts; by sharpening blades and edges of hand and power tools; and by repairing or arranging for the repair of damaged or broken equipment.
Skills in record keeping sufficient to collect and report data and document and maintain an inventory of hand and power tools.
Knowledge of shop math sufficient to estimate labor and material cost for planned projects, ability to requisition and select the necessary equipment and materials for completing construction projects.
Organizational skills sufficient to plan and coordinate work activities and to prioritize, schedule and report on the progress of carpentry projects.
Oral communication skills sufficient to instruct and monitor the carpentry work of lesser-skilled employees, incarcerated individuals, and residents and to train and direct them during the project, instructing on the appropriate use of equipment/tool use and carpentry techniques, by inspecting the quality of work performed by others, by providing constructive feedback on work performance, and by recording hours worked, materials and equipment used.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of a vocational/technical program in carpentry.
One (1) or more years experience as a supervisor, lead, or foreman.
Experience working in a correctional or secured setting.
Knowledge of the criminal justice system.
Physical Requirements
The completion of pre-placement physical components may be required for this position. These components consist of a tuberculosis screening and/or respirator clearance. Additional Requirements
The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections' policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.
Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections' policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
