Summary:
This position is responsible for assistance with performing and maintaining the activities of the Cancer Registry. Review patient records to collect the required American College of Surgeons (ASoC) and Illinois State Cancer Registry (ISCR) cancer abstracting data from inpatient and outpatient records, death certificates, pathology reports, and autopsy reports. Participates in various medical staff committee meetings to provide specific and aggregate data for the medical staff to develop cancer care plans. Maintains a demeanor and appearance appropriate for representation of RUMC. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values, and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures

Required Job Qualifications:
RHIA, RHIT or Certified Cancer Registrar (CTR).
One year experience in cancer registry abstracting.
Strong knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology.
Demonstrates ability to abstract data accurately from patient records.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience with computerized cancer registry database.
Proficient in computer use and software applications such as Word, Excel, etc.
Demonstrates positive RUMC image with all internal and external customers.
Demonstrates attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work successfully with different personality styles and with the Medical Staff.
Ability to keep focused and achieve high-quality levels of data collection to allow for data trending.
Ability to interact with and direct the work of others in a manner consistent with the Rush mission and values.
Ability to apply local, state, and federal guidelines with attention to detail.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential.
Prior inpatient and outpatient coding experience using ICD-9-CM.
Responsibilities:
Accurately captures the required data elements required by the American College of Surgeons by reading inpatient and outpatient medical records, death certificates, pathology reports, and autopsy reports of all patients eligible for cancer registration.
Perform edit-check procedure on all coded data according to ISCR & ACoS standards in order to assure the integrity of all cancer data and patient follow-up information.
Submit required data to Illinois State Cancer Registry (monthly) from all applicable cases.
Report appropriate cancer cases to National Cancer Database (monthly) as required by agreement and program standards.
Codes all follow-up information received from solicited sources on proper documents for computer input.
Answers correspondence calls from other Cancer Registries requesting information.
Provides support with compiling and providing cancer related statistical reports on request from medical staff, researchers, and administrative staff.
Assists in the production of the Annual Cancer Program Report.
Assist in preparing agenda, recording minutes, and circulating documents for Cancer Committee, Cancer Conference, and Subcommittee of the Cancer Program.
Maintains current knowledge of cancer trends and developments in the cancer field.
Maintains credential as required by professional associations.
Assists in the planning and revising of departmental procedures.
Communicates with other health care providers (hospitals, physicians, and other healthcare institutions) to obtain patient records and patient information on cancer patients referred to Rush University Medical Center for care or follow-up.
Participates in national and regional studies (patient care evaluation studies) identified by the Commission on Cancer for the American College of Surgeons and chosen by the Cancer Committee or Medical Staff by abstracting the data elements required.
Assist with collecting complete AJCC or appropriate staging by collecting diagnoses, morphology, topography, treatments, extent of disease, stage of cancer, follow-up attempts and treatments, and other demographic data, applying various morphology coding to the conditions, and entering the data into the database.
Reviews various reports such as operative logs, operative reports, pathology reports, etc. to identify patients that should be added to the cancer registry database. Finds the appropriate patient records and completes abstracting process.
Communicates with patients as necessary to meet ACoS follow-up requirements.
Prepares various reports as requested by Department Management and Cancer Committee physician members.
Supervises data entry related to cancer registry projects as needed.
Maintains production/abstraction statistics.
Completes other assigned duties as required.
