    This Opportunity

    WSP is currently seeking an Assistant Vice President / Associate Environmental Scientist to support our Southeast Region. This position will ideally be in our West Columbia, South Carolina Office and Atlanta, Georgia Office. This team member will be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that is passionate about meeting our client's objectives and solving their challenges across a wide range of disciplines.

    We are looking for someone to lead our South Carolina Natural Resources & Permitting team in project delivery, management of environmental resources permitting, mitigation and compliance projects, and business development to support our growing organization. A successful candidate will have demonstrated creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving environmental problems, determining objectives and requirements, organizing projects, and managing diverse environmental assessments and permitting activities. This position requires the successful evaluation and permitting of environmental impacts associated with a range of project development goals. The candidate shall have practical knowledge and experience with applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations including proficiency achieving permit approvals and ensuring the achievement of regulatory compliance requirements.

    Your Impact

    We are seeking qualified and self-motivated candidates to lead and grow our team, while providing leadership, management, a team-oriented environment, and mentorship to:

    • Build and lead the South Carolina Natural Resources & Permitting team in project development and delivery, technical proposals, task proposals including written scopes and cost estimating, project management, client relations, senior reviews and QA/QC, team development and training.

    • Lead development and permitting activities for public and private sector development projects including ecological restoration, renewable energy, renewable energy infrastructure, transportation, infrastructure, and land development projects throughout the Southeastern U.S., and coordinate cultural resource assessments.

    • Fulfill project management responsibilities, including the responsible management of both internal and external influencing factors to ensure project success.

    • Perform client relationship advancement and business development to continue delivery of business prosperity and growth objectives.

    • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with a variety of clients, teaming partners, and WSP internal staff.

    • Manage and mentor staff in the completion of natural resource surveys/assessments and report preparation, environmental documentation, and environmental permitting actions.

    • Work efficiently within culturally and geographically diverse cross-functional teams in executing project work.

    • Collect, analyze, and interpret data from multidisciplinary teams.

    • Prepare and review technical reports and analyses, permit applications, and conceptual mitigation.

    • Identify and negotiate suitable natural resources assessments, permitting timelines, and compensatory mitigation for projects and clients.

    • Commit to timely completion of high-quality work.

    • Remain current in latest environmental science subject matter and techniques.

    • Coordinate with private entities and local, state, and federal agencies.

    • Maintain existing clients while expanding natural resources services to new clients.

    • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct, safety and related policies and procedures.

    • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Biology, Wildlife Biology, or a related sciences field; Master's Degree preferred.

    • 10+ years of experience working as an environmental scientist and completing biological surveys (e.g., vegetation, wetlands, wildlife, avian, marine), fieldwork, habitat, and impact assessments, data collection, technical reporting, permitting, and/or construction monitoring/compliance.

    • Accomplished knowledge of siting, permitting, and mitigation for renewable, utility, energy, and infrastructure projects, including pipelines and related facilities, transmission lines, substations, renewable energy, and transportation projects.

    • Accomplished knowledge of local/regional ecology, habitats, applicable species, and applicable permitting and mitigation processes (e.g. Section 404, Section 408, Section 10, NEPA, SCDHEC Permitting, NPDES, SHPO, and U.S Fish and Wildlife Service coordination).

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, ESRI Software, AutoCAD, and mobile GPS technologies.

    • Excellent written and oral interpersonal communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to scientific and non-scientific audiences.

    • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, quality, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.

    • Ability to learn and apply new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and work independently.

    • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most effective manner to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.

    • Proven record of accomplishment upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.

    • Occasional travel will be required depending on project-specific requirements.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's Degree is preferred

    • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred

    • Professional Wetland Scientist, Certified Wildlife Biologist, Certified Ecologist, or similar certification

    • Professional Project Manager (PMP)

    • US Army Corps of Engineers 1987 Wetlands Manual Training - 40 Hour Training Course
